Once we get a full compliment of people, we can discuss the details of the project in full. You'll see that I already have some ideas about how this will be accomplished....

Cool, added.

Since Toady released a beta version of 31.04 yesterday, I'm not sure how to treat it contest-wise as I'd been waiting for the 'official' release. Fortunately, despite 31.04 still being buggy it's apparently save-compatible with 31.03, so I guess I can give the go-ahead for any team to start whenever they're ready. Though I have no intention of closing sign-ups at any point; latecomers are welcome to join even in a month if they so choose.

Retro, about the tower rules. If it is partially sunk into the ground and given a 5+ tile berth on all sides, but carved out of the rock, will that still count?

Or will it all have to be constructed materials?

Constructed materials I think...

Nope, it'll totally count. The 5-tile berth is entirely just to make sure that people have to put in some effort when extending the tower downwards as building up is much slower in comparison. If you want your tower to be entirely made from natural rock and soil that's absolutely fine.

That's actually really good news. I can dig out part of the tower underground for materials and then use those to build upwards.

Beats digging for materials for its own sake.

In time. I'd like to wait to see if more people will join the group before we start bouncing ideas off of each other. It's been less than a day since sign-ups for the contest started, let's be patient and wait.

I think just the two players is okay for the team. What say you, Robocorn?

As 31.04 is out, despite apparently being buggy although I haven't yet noticed, Silfurdreki and I are going to get started pretty shortly. No hurry though. Jim, if you don't get a full team by the time you're ready to start, there's no problem adding team members midway through construction. To get another six people I also suggest asking a few people who you think might be interested as well - I went and tracked down Silfurdreki in order to join up with him.

This looks like a blast!  Hey Urist Imiknorris and Robocorn, I'd love to go in with you on team Chaotic Evil.  We could bring the Skyscrapes hurt.  If you guys are good with just two, I'm happy to start my own team.

This sounds cool. Sadly, Friday (and part of Saturday) are pretty much the only two days I'll be able to actually be able to work on a tower (or anything else really), due to the sudden rush of work that's come up prior to finals and the end of the school year.
Also I need to download .31.3 or .4 before I can actually consider working on this, but...
I'll go with a smaller team, I guess - I don't exactly have the experience with DF yet to lead a group, but on the other hand don't want to risk messing up a larger group's project...
Also I have a hankering to build the tower on the floor of one of the caverns - for some reason Final Fantasy 4's Tower of Babel/Bab-il is coming to mind when I think of what I'd like to see with this thing.

Welcome. I think we should wait for one more person before starting.

I guess I'll join Urist then - any tower that plans to have something resembling the Eye of Sauron at its zenith is a good tower in my eyes.

Edit: Pheonix, not Phoenix. Don't ask me why or how I misspelled it in the first place, because the misspelling took place five years ago and eventually it stuck.

Okay, I'll update and close Team Chaotic Evil momentarily. Team order is up to you so long as nobody goes two years in a row.
