So, if I was to pick one of the two, either Fallout 3 or New Vegas, what should I get? FO3 is $20 and New Vegas is still at $50. I like the open world feel of Morrowind and I am hoping for that type of experience.

I see such mixed reviews, some people liked one and disliked the other. What gives?

There's quite a difference between the games, though they are based almost entirely on the same engine. The writers (and other staff?) of New Vegas are pretty much the same that did 1 and 2.
I would definitely say, however, that those people who preferred Morrowind over Oblivion mostly prefer New Vegas over FO3.

Having played both, I'd go with New Vegas.

Of course, Fallout 3 has its moments too. Liberty Prime comes to mind, but for that you have to play through the entire main campaign, which is kind of lackluster, and then do Broken Steel.

I personally would prefer Vegas, since there are much more factions, you can choose sides, the dialogue is much much better and the story isn't nearly as bland as Fallout 3 (which was even more shallow than mount Everest). Also, Vegas has much more hours, weapons, cities and stuff into it, definately Vegas (if you ask me).

Fallout 1,2 and 3 never really had a good story. New Vegas is the best story, IMO.

There is no "happy ending" with the BoS.

You either kill them or otherwise cripple them, leading to endings like "you meanie, look what you did to the poor widdle Brotherhood", or you help them and get "the BoS, helped by you, turned into complete jerks and jerkified the wasteland with their jerkness. Good job. Jerk.". The "best" ending is having them make BFFs with the NCR, which pretty much amounts to "they're friends now, so the BoS bullies them around so they give up all their high tech shit. They're still jerks, btw".

What kind of ending would you expect? That they're supposed to be friends with the NCR on a submissive basis? "Oh, nevermind our mission to keep high tech weaponry from the war mongering masses. And don't worry about those brothers and elder you slaughtered at the power station for whatever reason. We're friends, right?". There's no reason for the BoS to unconditionally bend over for the NCR. Getting the T-51b's (most likely stripped off of dead BoS) and energy weapons in return for help at the dam and peace is hardly bullying. As far as I'm concerned that's the only good ending you're going to get with the BoS without turning them into care bears.

There really should have been some kind of BoS centered ending, imo. Personally I did all the BoS missions and entered the brotherhood, only to have House tell me to kill all of them. My only choice was to blow up the bunker or never finish the game, so I waited for the BoS to start returning to the surface to do the deed. The rest of the game was great, but that part felt like a major fuck you.
