Troll Fortress
« on: May 14, 2010, 12:12:27 pm »

An otherwise average looking world I generated last night became a lot more interesting when I looked at the civilizations - troll, at war with ogres and dragons.  Just for kicks I started them off in Terrifying badlands territory (with some woods), where I plan to make them the meanest, baddest kitten ranchers in this world.

I've never played as a non-dwarf race before - are there any quirks I should know about?

Will the ogres and dragons siege?  I'm only beginning to imagine the defensive fun it will be to keep out two building destroyer races.

Trolls? Ogres? Dragons? Did you mod the game? I've never seen a dragon carpenter before.

I think it's some duplication bug. It causes lots of weird stuff, and can also produce random crashes. You'd be much safer with a really modded game, not freaked out. The file "errorlog.txt" is your friend.

When I read the title of this thread, I didn't think that this was the direction you were going to go :p

But no, you shouldn't be getting sieged by ogres or dragons, I think. But it sounds like your game is heavily different from the regular version, so perhaps anything is possible.

I modded my cows to have shells, to get around 31's irritating shell shortage, and added [sand] to some of the 'sandy' soil types so I wouldn't have to be so picky about embarks.   Other than that I just use DwarfTherapist and a graphics set.  The select embark screen listed trolls, dragons, and ogres with red lines on the latter two.  When I embarked, sure enough the graphic set showed my starting seven as trolls.  I'm pretty sure the world gen defaults were simply for medium non-island.  I can only guess that the dwarf civs died out, and the game offers the next race available to play with?  I'm a relatively new player (about 5 or so forts with d19 and 3-4 here).

I should also mention I was generating a new world because my last fort kept crashing over and over - perhaps something is corrupted?

Can someone describe in simplest terms how I can find out the world seed, and I can see if I can duplicate it on a clean install?

Make a backup of the save folder.  Load either the original or backup and abandon the fort.  From the main menu, select Start Playing, and then Legends Mode.  At the bottom, one of the options should tell you what key to press to export world gen parameters.  After the export, there should be some new files in the same folder as the DF exe.  One of them has your worldgen parameters; you can copy the whole thing and drop it into worldgen.txt in the init folder (rename the name of the worldgen parameters, eg [TITLE:LARGE ISLAND], so there isn't a conflict).  Or you can manually enter the seeds in the in game options.  I would use the creature, history, and world seeds (name seed not absolutely necessary).

Also, why not post the worldgen parameters it spits out ;)

Thanks, Ilmoran.  When I get a chance I will try that out and post an update.  If its a playable world I'd be happy to post the details, I was thinking of spending some free time this weekend playing a fort out just to see if it would play stable.

Check the errorlog.txt, there should be errors which cause it. You WILL have crashes no matter what and your save will be corrupted at some point, so better clean your raws.

If you cannot do that, you can upload the file and I will fix it.

Yeah, that's definitely a duplication error. What program do you use to modify your raws, and does it create backup copies? If so, delete the backup copies from the raw folder. DF reads them despite not being txt files.

Someone should turn this into a real mod. It could be called the titans mod: Ogres, Trolls, Frost Giants, and Dragons duking it out for the future of the world!

I use UltraEdit.  I believe it does default to leaving *.bak's, so that sounds like the issue.  I'll check the errorlog.txt when I get home.  Ah well, I was really looking forward to trying this world out.

Too bad there's no such thing as frost giants. :(

Also, Dragons never die in world gen (But are so easy to kill on an adventurer)

Frost giants exist in Civ Forge. Also, dragons are one of the only things capable of killing most megabeasts. "Burned up in dragonfire" FTW!

Errorlog was full of duplication errors, and sure enough raw/objects had .bak files.  Reusing the seeds didn't pop the same world.  Ah well, thanks for recognizing it, maybe my older fortress is recoverable now that I've cleaned them out.  Disappointed it was a bug though, I think I will have to drown my trollish tears in Deon's mod.  :)
