I guess its because of the whole influx of shitty fantasy novels (PJATO, Twilight [yes, its considered one... I think], etc.), Ms. Banks thought that she could do it too.

I just looked up Percy Jackson and the Olympians and facepalmed.

Dear god, books about the author avatar of a kid with ADHD and dyslexia.

It gets worse. It's a three-book deal.

I read this and instantly thought of the episode of 'Stuart Lee's Comedy Vehicle' about books.

I will approach this the same way I approach the Twilight franchise:

who cares? I won't read it, so it matters so so s-s-sooooooo little to me that it's inconcievable that I would have any sort of emotion towards it whatsoever. That's the great thing about books that you assume you won't like: you. don't. have. to. read. them. or. care. about. them.

I've never seen him before, but he's pretty damn funny.

Thumbs up, fenrif.

Oh god, I can't stand coming of age things. Or models, for that matter.

....There is a 100% chance of moviefication.

Also, I would like to defend models here for a bit.

Yes, they don't really do anything other than "look good", but just imagine the social stigma they probably face. No one takes them seriously, everyone objectifies them and thinks they are shallow. (or at least every human being I have ever heard talk about models)

They face constant hypocritical attacks on their industry about "Why do you HAVE to show such skinny and perfect models wearing your clothes? It is evil and makes other women hate themselves" but when the designers actually try to make the models more like manequins just to 100% show the clothes it becomes "You are not showing the models? That is sexist! Women are beautiful, you can't just objectify them like that"

I imagine people who want to be models probably want some kind of support from the constant insecurity they must face from the world that judges them so harshly. If Tyra Banks, a celebrity who like it or not has influence over impressionable youth, wants to write a novel that supposedly empowers young models: let her! There's nothing wrong with wanting to make a group of people who do no harm feel better about themselves. It is the completely wrong thing to do to attack her for the fact that she wants to make a book.

It's kinda hard to feel sorry for someone whos job description is "look pretty" and earns millions from it. Wow, you won the genetic lottory and cashed it in for fame and fortune, so sorry your life is so hard.

The main problem I have with this is that she got a publishing contract because she's famous. It'll get made into a movie because it's the book written by Tyra Banks, regardless of the quality. It'll sell well because it'll be exhaustivly marketed, plastered all over every ad space you can imagine.

And all the while there are thousands of writers who are struggling to make it, can't find an agent, can't get a publishing deal, can't get their book marketed at all, etc.

how do you write a fantasy book about modeling? I am assuming it's somewhat like Sleeping Beauty, with an evil model queen ordering her young rival (whose name is likely Aryt Sknab, and is totally not an author avatar), but she triumphs and gets the prince in the end. Also, sparkling vampires

All good points. Especially about the writers. I agree that we probably need good writers more than good models, but I don't think you can really judge Tyra for wanting to write a book. It's her decission, and she obviously feels like she's doing the right thing. As for the genetic lottery bit, that's somewhat true for any profession. Some people are born into a really smart family, and thus are able to become a succesful banker or invester. Some people are born into really muscular and strong families, and become laborers or boxers or something that plays upon their natural skills. Everyone is naturally inclinded towards SOMETHING.

Also, from the little I know about T-Banks, she did work very hard to get to where she is now, and is trying to do good with the celebrity status that she's earned.

You're right, we should stop hating on someone who's writing a book that will make her big fat wads of cash, more than I'll see in ten years at my current job, she's just doing what she feels she should. /notsarcasm/sarcasm
