But really though, anyone who doesn't have orange box by now is pretty much living under a rock and/or truely cannot call themselves gamers. $30, and comes with portal, TF2, and HL2 (all 3 released parts).

Hey, free Portal!

I downloaded it yesterday and spent about four very enjoyable hours beating it. GLaDOS is now in my top 10 list of Best Game Villains. She's like SHODAN's somewhat ditzier sister.

The one thing I quibble with:

I totally didn't "connect" with the Weighted Companion Cube. I was under the impression that you have it for most of the game and have to euthanize it near the end. Instead, you have it for one level that took me like ten minutes? Hard to develop an emotional attachment in that short a time period.

Yeah I think the joke was that GladOS expected you to develop an attachment, and its kinda silly, then you see the 'hidden' room and realize someone did in fact love the cube.

Still, best line ever. "If the companion cube does talk, we urge you to disregard its advice."

You shouldn't trust silly internet memes.

The whole "companion cube" nonsense was only started because playtesters ignored the box if the game did not constantly talk about it. Like, didn't think to deflect the energy pellets with it. So, they put a little heart on its side, had GLaDOS speak of it as if it were a character. And to make GLaDOS seem more like a dick, had her order you to kill it, as if it were a character. It wasn't as if they could just let you keep the box. Many puzzles hinge on not having a box. There are emancipation fields around for that very purpose. Anyway, since the box was one of the three characters in the game, not counting the rat man, it developed a sizable fanclub.

I felt a bit anxious about "euthanizing" the companion cube, because GLaDOS kept harping about how it's perfectly fine for me to do that. "An independent panel of ethicists has absolved you of all responsibility" and all that.

I was more sad about killing GlaDOS than the cube.  After it was over I wanted to caress her plastic outer casing, and tell her I was sorry and that I loved her.
