Unfortunately Battleships forever is very computer intensive. Unless I'm missing something... which I'd love to be, since I'd like to play it on my poor little laptop.

No, it's CPU intensive. Gamemaker starts to get pissy about resources when there are several hundred dozen objects on screen at a time.

Speaking of BSF, I've made a set of ships based off of FF8's GFs, for some reason. Of the 14 (equippable) GFs, the only ones I'm missing are Doomtrain and Leviathan. Leviathan is already taken by the game, and I didn't really feel like doing Doomtrain.

It's not freeware (I think it's meant to be free-to-play though), but mytheon is in open beta.

It plays a bit like diablo but with a sort of psuedo CCG mechanic. You collect or buy stones in the game and then make a 'deck' of them to use when you're out fighting. The stones can either be creatures, buildings, abilities, or spells and different classes are good at different types of stones.

I've just started downloading it now, gonna give it a look when it's done.

Eh, computer intensive is okay now.
I've got a laptop, but it has 2GB of RAM and a 2GHz processor.

Nethack, OpenTTD, Spelunky, The Ur-Quan Masters, and Transcendence are all good options.

Seconding The Ur-Quan Masters, there's a lot of fun and playtime in that. Especially if you don't use the wiki for spoilers
