Feasability of Oceanfront Fort
« on: May 12, 2010, 10:08:23 pm »

So I'm pursuing the ultimate dwarfiness dream(hunting mermaids, slaughtering mermaids, AND obsidian casting all at once) and I've got a good location, a penensula with a volcano, not too close, and plenty of trees. The question is, is desalination feasible to get running within the first year? And will the aquifer be saltwater as well?

In 40d I believe it was all or nothing as far as salinity of the water. But I wonder if in the new version the cavern layers have fresh water...

As far as desalination you can get that up very quickly by using wood pump components and manual pumping. I've have mixed success with it though, it's worked only once for me (out of 2 tries). I definitely could have just screwed up the first try though.

as long as you build your cistern with constructed walls and floors (and not on the same level as the ocean), you'll be able to do it within a few seasons.

The caverns will not be freshwater, they are always salt water on a oceanic map.

Does your cistern seriously have to be on a different level? must it really be above? :'( I don't want that to be what I screwed up with my cisterns.

Or was it the smoothed natural stone instead of actual constructions?

And if the desalinized water ever touches a natural floor or wall it will /all/ become salt water again.

No, it checks if the Z level above the XY position if it has a floor. As run about that is, thats not recognition of a ceiling. Pretty sure, at least.

I thought using a well counted as desalinization, even if it feeds directly from the ocean.
