Am I The Only One Waiting For Global Catastrophe?
« on: May 12, 2010, 07:02:44 pm »

So, AM I the only one waiting for global catastrophe? Seriously, if there was a doomsday cult that was getting results, I would so join it.

I just feel really listless and bored, and I just want something to shake the world up similar to the Cold War / World War II. I don't know about you guys, but these last twenty years have been boring for most of the Western world.

Oh, and...

Ia! Ia! Azathoth THINKS! Ia! Ia! Azathoth WAKES! Ia! Ia! Azathoth BREAKS! (Just in case.)

The last twenty years have been fairly interesting. The Nazis and the Soviets never succeeded in actually bombing the USA, after all, whereas Al Qaeda has active agents running around plotting American deaths every day, and they aren't being held back by politics.

If Al Qaeda was as strong as Nazi Germany or the Soviet Union were, the West would be on fire.

Pfft, Al Qaeda are a disorganised rabble blown way out of proportion to terrify American citizens into letting go of their rights. I suspect most of the things attributed to Al Qaeda have nothing to do with them at all, in reality, and are just the disgruntled Muslim version of school shootings.

If you want to see REAL terrorists, look at Hamas. Now those guys can actually be pretty scary.

we´re getting global catastrophes every now and them. Come on, this year, without thinking too much about it: two tsunamis, two earthquakes, an ongoing volcanic eruption....

Not really what I'd count as global. What I'd count as global is that island having it's half broken off (can't remember the name of it) and causing a tidal wave to take out most of Eastern (or was it Western?) American infrastructure, as well as having knock-on effects in various other countries.

Yeah, it would be totally awesome if something horrible happened to thousands or, preferably, millions of people to relieve my ennui.

...Really? This isn't bad satire? If you're bored go out and do something. Gawd.

Of course, I feel the same way. Wouldn't it be nice for something to change? Fuck the world, if the zombies arise or there are soviet paratroopers over the city, it's the chance for anyone to be a hero. Find a worthwhile death?

Sorry comrade, worthwhile deaths aren't all that easy to find anymore.

It would be a welcome change. Mainland US hasn't been invaded in a long time, I wonder if it will in out lifetime.

Almost certainly not. Nuclear countries don't get invaded. The presence of nuclear weapons means that a country can not be defeated militarily, only annihilated.

You could also just pretend there's a global catastrophe. Stop using electricity and tap water. Stop doing anything that requires you to interact with people as normal. Instead, drink from ditches and hunt rats for food. Live in a cardboard box. Eat a car battery to simulate poisoning from whatever imaginary disaster you're trying to survive. If someone comes to talk to you, assume they're a cannibal and run away. If you wake up in a hospital, pretend you're in a prison camp and don't speak the language. There's nothing actually forcing you to take advantage of all the good things society has made.

I would say there have been some interesting developments during the last twenty years. The internet has becoming mainstream, for instance. Man, remember what the internet was like back in 1990? I certainly don't. And the mobile telephones? I did a quick search for pictures, and found these little bricklets from 1991. Cheaper and cheaper lithium-ion batteries have also made things like ten-euro RC helicopters possible. And speaking of euros, the European Monetary Union happened. I think the world is doing just fine without an ongoing global war.

I always think an apocalypse (where I live of course) would be interesting, or maybe just surviving a major hurricane or something. Although a simple crises for a week or so might be best, because life sucks without meds/computers.

Obviously I don't actually wish for any real disaster to happen.

Also, the apocalyptic effects of global warming seem way overblown. Worst case scenario is we lose a lot of major cities and have to move farther inland. Probably some rioting/looting too and economic problems. Seems inevitable though considering that even Al Gore won't give up his hamburgers.

Worst scale scenario is that the Siberian tundras and the methane clathrate on the ocean floor melt sending a metric fuckton of methane into the air. With methane being several order of magnitude worse then CO22, that's bound to screw some things over Venus style.

Edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clathrate_gun_hypothesis
Apparently, it can also have some more explosive results, in theory. Think blowing up the shoreline explosive...

I'm more concerned about it being a very abrupt kickstart to the cascading warming cycle, that shuts down the Atlantic Conveyor and turns the Midwest into the Kalahari.

On the other hand, that would speed along the hero-making catastrophic scenario I'm hoping for, The Second American Civil War.  Although I would probably have to flee Texas.
