"Many women who do not dress modestly…lead young men astray, corrupt their chastity and spread adultery in society, which increases earthquakes," said Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedighi as reported by Iranian media in April.

Hey, that quote was taken out of context. What he really said was: "Many women who do not dress modestly…lead young men astray, corrupt their chastity and spread adultery in society, which increases earthquakes in my pants."

Coming up next in the UN's agenda, electing Kim Jong Il to oversee the nuclear regulatory comittee!

Really UN?

It reminds me of the problems of using the quote fact that Amedijahad wanted to "wipe Isreal off the page of the map"
I was in a debate, and the opponent pair claimed to speak the original farsi, which should properly be translated to "The regime in Jerusalem should be removed from the page of time"
Completely crazy, you know?

Yeeaaaah. That's one glaring problem with the UN. Everybody gets a turn at the wheel (well, the little wheels, at least). Even the retard countries.

I suppose it's institutionalized fairness, but it leads to things like this.

Would be the first time that happened. Remeber when some high USSR official said "we will burry you" to a US official, which later turned out to be a russian phrase for saying "we'll outlive you"?

The interesting thing was that I don't think that the line "Remove from the page of time" is much different from "wipe off the map"

In any case, we've got to cut the UN some slack. It's not like they keep super anti-human rights country on the Human Rights commission, like Saudi Arabia, Sudan, or China or anything.

The crucial bit would be "the regime" part... that implies they hate the current administration rather than the country.

But it's obvious that Iran seriously hates Israel in any case, so...

The United Nations is an international organization composed of nations, regardless of ideology, united for many different and varied purposes, but united nevertheless. It is not, and I repeat, it is NOT, an organization made to promote whatever policy you want!

Why do you guys criticize a nation for holding a policy that you disagree with? The fact remains that this nation exist, is a part of the international community, is a part of the United Nations, and has been duly nominated by the Middle Eastern voting bloc to represent it. Rather than just exclude that nation out of a fool-hardy belief that certain nations deserve to sit on a council and certain nations do not, why can't you just admit that the international community isn't always in favor of human rights?

Argh!

I'm just frustrated over the burqa issue.

Sure, fine, it's an expression of male dominance, yadda yadda yadda, but for some Muslim women it's an integral part of their religion. For them, immodesty is baring skin. It frustrates me that people compare burqa-wearing to the really old standby of Imperial China, foot-binding. Foot-binding is definitely harmful, Burqas aren't.

Indeed.  It's very much a cultural thing, and the women in question certainly aren't upset about it themselves.  For whatever reason, my university is host to very large population of Middle Eastern and African exchange students and immigrants.  Some of the women wear full robes and burqas, some wear jeans and long-sleeve shirts, but they all wear scarves and hoods.  And get rather offended when super-feminist women (which my college doesn't have many of) try to convince them otherwise.

I suppose you could make a "harmful" argument for burqas like the Taliban favors, which is essentially a heavy burlap bag, with a slightly thinner part that you're supposed to breathe and see through.  Those look very uncomfortable.

At any rate, Iran on the Women's Rights Council eh?  I wonder if anyone will bring up Boobquake.

Okay, yeah, those burqas are messed up. But France banned headscarves, even. Epic fail.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Hey, if Iran gets to be on the Human Rights Committee, there's not much room to complain about France, internationally speaking.

France has been steadily banning public jerking-off-about religious symbols of most stripes, so I have a hard time getting bothered over this.

Indeed.  It's very much a cultural thing, and the women in question certainly aren't upset about it themselves.
The question I have is whether they actually have the standing and capability to be upset with it. The correlation between particularly backwards forms of religion and really good indoctrination techniques is pretty good.

I mean, shit. I know a kid with a biology degree, cum laude, who believes intelligent design should be taught in school. This shit is powerful.

Culture is weird. Why would it matter if they can't decide for themselves if they aren't upset that they can't? The only reason it matters is because we believe differently.

That said, Iran should only be on a woman's rights committee if it's an anti-woman's rights committee. What do they possibly hope to gain from this?

A scapegoat for when they accomplish absolutely nothing.
