I'm pretty certain they make cheap plastic candy moulds that work just fine, and even come in "gemstone" shapes like the one above.

Google Shopping gives some good results.

I think it's a vastly amusing thought that elephants are so afraid of heights that when Dwarves invented the Z-axis, they couldn't bear to face dwarves in combat anymore.

Oh, by the way, does anyone know if you can make candy syrup, let it cool, then melt it down again and reuse it? Or will it mess up that way?

As a side note, what is the recipe for the candy itself?

2 cups sugar, 2/3 cup light corn syrup, and 3/4 cup hot water per batch, with a few drops, I guess, of flavor extract added.

I think that's for chocolate, the internet says to use a saucepan. And the Internet, as we know, is never wrong.

Graaaaah.
Does anyone know of a physical chain of stores that I can go to and buy molds for hard candy? (I don't think plastic molds work, they're only for chocolate)

Some plastic candy molds are made for hard candy, and others are made for soft candy. Searching for "Hard gem candy mold" cuts out most of the chocolate molds.

I'm afraid I don't know much about brick-and-mortar candy stores. Gem shaped hard candy molds seem like something of a specialty item.

Double boilers are pretty useful--good for anything that you don't want to burn/overcook. Candy, chocolate, sauces with egg and/or cream that you don't want to break, etc.
