No.

There's demons underneath the adamantine. They'll swarm into your fortress and kill everything. they're easily the toughest enemies in thegame, and come in a huge variety of sometimes-unkillable forms.

It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

Ever since the 2D version, when you start mining the adamantine (not just discovering it), you begin the descent to Game Over. In 40d, the Game Over wasn't automatic and you instead got some superFun trying to kill everything. Players figured out ways of beating the superFun and if they did that was it, the superFun didn't come back. Now in DF2010,

Lets say if i made a drawbridge a lever and mechanisims i greadily mined the adimantine then erected the drawbridge to prevent any unwanted nasties from coming in would it work in time?

they would probably destroy the drawbridge. you're better off just building a wall. no fortifications, since sometimes the demons are made of mist, and will just go right through

Of course, if you can separate yourself with another kind of gap (air, or liquid-filled) it might help.  Except that various Clowns can fly/swim (including, naturally for at least some of them, through magma) so that's a bit difficult, all the while capable of destroying the barriers you raise.  Now, making a set of defensive circles alternately filled with water and magma and gaps, to deal with the different sub-sets of the Clowns, could help (with the added confusion of what happens when they destroy the barriers between different liquid zones), but I never really worked out if that worked, due to Other Things happening when I tried to set that up.

And how this relates to 2010, with the additionally reported variance of circus performers...  It's going to be fun to find out, once I've done all I want to do with my more mundane genealogy experiments, I suspect.  (Or if I get closer than I meant to do while enlarging the fortress to keep it viable so I can conduct those experiments, of course. :))

Just start a fort specifically for the purpose of Digging Too Deep. Why ask when you can SCIENCE?

And they all can fly, avoid traps, destroy buildings, and swim in both water and magma, and there are some that can pass through fortifications. Cave-ins and bladed weapons are the only ways to ensure their death.

"Clowns" are a euphemism. They aren't really clowns. They are eldritch forgotten horrors not meant to be seen by mortal eyes.

And seriously, SCIENCE! If you have a question about "what happens if I..." just start a throwaway fort somewhere and DO IT.
