And governments.

Lobbying = bribery. But they're not about to make it illegal for someone to give them a bribe.

All of this could have been worse, I suppose.  They could have accidently broke through the clownite and opened the way to the circus.

Unless we're dealing with oil clowns... beware their deadly gas!

I think it is far too late for that. It seems quite reasonable to assume that those managers are actually clowns....

They could be fire clown corpses. Since something makes them burn while they live, they could turn to just the "fuel" when they die.

So, oil deposits are actually clown graveyards. It's a shame our drillers are too lousy to find the clownite patches below them.

This woman is difficult to listen to. I absolutely hate her voice, her inflection, her pauses, her grandstanding. I don't know who she is but she's just completely terrible in this. Like, Boxbot-level terrible.

That said, she brings up some history. I haven't checked to see if it's all accurate. I'm tired, anyway, if anyone wants to please feel free.

Basically, this gulf coast thing has happened before, same reasons, and oil spills in general, but our tech hasn't gotten any better. Well, the technology for effective drilling has gotten better. Just not the safety tech.

But I'd be just as pleased to find out she's full of shit. I hated listening to her that much.

Haven't looked at the link, but are you saying that she's suggesting that there has been a massive oil spill that has consumed the Gulf Coast before?

Because I'd be pretty surprised if everybody had just forgotten about something like that. It would be like nobody remember Hurricane Katrina as a precedent right after a second hurricane smashed New Orleans.

She said one in 1979 was spilling 30,000 barrels a day.

Well, there you go.

I guess the solution is to wait for a year.

EDIT: Take note that another weak-willed Democrat President was in power at the time.

Thank God that our Lord Jesus will smite down Barrack Hussein Obama before he can make it to a second term, and replace him with Lady Liberty Palin.

I know you're trollin'.  You have to be trollin'.

The point that video was trying to make is that in the 30 years since the Ixtoc spill, the oil industry has invented plenty of new ways to drill deeper wells (and has gotten blanket permission to do so), when they didn't know how to fix a leak in 1979 that's so much like the one today, and haven't come up with any new ideas.  Not that there's that many avenues to explore really, but it's a great thing to get imperious and angry about.

Although, perhaps waiting to let it drain out to equal pressure is a solution with just as good of a chance at success as what they're doing now. I don't know, I'm not an oilman. It was cool to have someone who knew what he was talking about hit the thread.

Well, letting it drain basically has a 100% chance of success, although, one would hope that there are faster approaches that involve less leaking. I still like my idea of using balloons to temporarily clog the pipe while you fille it up with something solid...

Well, it's almost certainly the largest accidental spill in history, surpassing transocean's LAST gulf gaffe. So, it can't get any worse from a PR perspective. Biggest spill by 10,000 barrels is basically just as bad as biggest spill by 100,000 barrels.

"Oooops, we goofed, sorry about that, but we are dong our best to fix it."
is much better from a PR perspective than
"Get your mindless plebs out of our business!"

If the stupidly-named 'top kill' effort had been successful, I would hope to have heard by now. So I can only guess that its value has been limited to PR. It would seem to be a wild success too! People are still talking about how to fix it rather than boycotting the company for being so lax...
