PACILAOMETHU, A Journey to Distant Lands
« on: May 11, 2010, 12:49:34 pm »

Alright, first attempt at a community fort. Epistolary/journal format for the most part, blah blah blah. Superlong journey, far from the mountainhomes, etc.

The mountainhomes are located within the red blob outline near the equator; the fort site is up in the northeastern part of the same continent. Thoughts and ideas are welcome; more images and updates to come.

Done, Urist.

CutieBard: Would you like a name for the doctor?

Side note: All the female dwarfs in the party but one have shaved heads. Does that strike anyone else as unusual?

A preliminary journal entry, the start of the journey.

13 Gran 1050
Embarkation

This is Vucar Cattenusen. Well, I guess I'm Expedition Leader Vucar Cattenusen now. I've known about this for a couple months now, but it still doesn't feel real. I'm not even 60 years old; why did I get the honor of forging a new city in the far-far-away? There's plenty of time to be philosophical on the way, though. I'll ponder it then and just be happy I have the job.

Our journey is a mysterious one in that none of us were told exactly why we're being sent where we are. Ours is an expedition into a distand land of goblins, far beyond the farthest any of us has ever been from home. It sounds so exciting, going out and seeing the world and conquering the great unknown for queen and country, into the barren wastes where the smoke from obsidian towers can be seen over the mountains... Our destination is a place called The Heavenly Hollow, which least sounds like a safe place amid the chaos, if a little elvish. I really must wonder what brings us there, though. Surely not a goodwill mission to goblins! I should know what is in store when the time comes, however. I've been given a letter with the royal seal on it and everything, to be opened not before our arrival. I wonder what's inside...

Tunnels and Mountain Paths

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The orders manifest I've been given says that we're going from the capital to Zonerith by way of Ustuthardes, picking up colonists in the mountainhomes in between. "We" in this case refers to myself and Urist Laznish, our axedwarf. I must confide to you that I'm not sure how good she'll be at that job. Back in the capital, while loading the wagon for the first leg of the journey, she had to stop and take a breather after every barrel she loaded, and that's only the ones she could lift! She seems nice enough, though. Effervescent and positive; I'm glad we have at least one pleasant person on the trip. She seems to think we're about halfway to the next city. Maybe this isn't so bad.

17 Gran 1050
Gikutineth
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We've arrived at Gikutineth. The next dwarf, according to our itinerary, is going to be a doctor, and we should contact an administrator to get hold of him. For now, however, I think we should make shelter for the night, as it is deathly cold, and it started to snow after we arrived.

Free lodging! Score!

18 Gran

So, I must say, I like this sunken plaza they have here. It's open to the sky and all the rock veins are showing through. We met the doctor there and found our wagon resupplied and ready to leave, and so we did.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The doctor's name is Ezum Amostegar, and is she a big one. She hasn't talked much; Urist even tried that icebreaker of icebreakers, "What's your favorite rock?" and got only "Rutile, probably" in response. "Rutile, probably"! I have never heard anyone NOT start talking about their preferred minerals and why, and neither has Urist. We've got a real live one here--the next city can't come soon enough.

I'll take any dude you have left. Preferably one that will eventually wind up in the military, but whatever. You can name him "Corinthius", because I am an egotistical jerk like that. ;-)

Thanks!

Since you'd rather have a dude, I gave you Erush the planter. We'll see what happens in time; welcome to the fold!

Awesome! I love my dwarf. Don't forget to set her to be 'chief medical dwarf' too.

24 Gran 1050
Ustuthardes

We made it to Ustuthardes safely a few hours after noon. Fell off the wagon in the morning; had to have a drink to dull the pain. Seems that we're picking up two here--a miner and a mason.

Apparently free lodging for the Queen's expeditions is a universal thing. It's good to be the leader.

The Road

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Leesin Amvucar and Mafool Zefonathel are the two we've picked up. Not Mafol, but Mafool. I hate when parents give children stupid names like that... At any rate, he's a little more outgoing than Ezum, which isn't saying much, but still. Urist put the same question to him that she asked Erush. Apparently his favorite rock is cobaltite. The miner is a woman named Leesin Amvucar. I'm no longer the youngest of the party! She's pretty large, like the doctor, but it does seem to be muscle in her case, probably from the mining. I asked her what mining is like, and if it ever gets lonely. She said she never got lonely while digging; apparently she likes being alone. I can respect that, I suppose. She really loves her work, by the way she talks. On another note, I notice now that I am the only one with a head covered in hair on this trip. Even Mafool shaves his cranium and leaves his sideburns, beard, and moustache. I'm rather scared that I'll wake up one night to everyone holding me down while Ezum cuts my hair off.

Zonerith

Well, here it is. The last time we'll see our homeland for a very long time. We will find a resting place, repair, and take on supplies, then the last two colonists will join us, and we'll leave. I know it's for the good of the nation, and that this is something that every dwarf dreams of, but I just can't shake the feeling that I might never come back.

2 Slate

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We've received our next order package, put in for supplies, and the last of the colonists spent the day with us. The wagon will be ready in the morning, when we will gather at the temple to ask the blessing of the gods, and then we will all be off. Big day tomorrow. Still anxious.

Rocky Wastelands

A moving surprise after the temple service: we were taken to our wagon and led past all the mountain halls in the city, where everyone cheered and bid us farewell. The town guard escorted us, with music and everything. It never really hit me what we're accomplishing here. We're going out into the middle of nowhere, risking our very lives, and carving a thriving city our of the rock! It's truly amazing...

I only wish that the hospitality would go with us farther. Our directions say we are to go to a stream and ride it and the river it attaches to as far as we can. Playpapers, it's called, and the river is The High Lung. The last tributary of this river before the sea, going northward, we shall ride north to its source, continue north toward the coast, and meet a highway or the human city Lapaobol. It goes on for several more pages after that, but I think we should take this one life-threatening excursion at a time. Look out, world, it's The Chamber of Throats!

So that's the party. The last one was an unclaimed peasant woman. I may include a map of our intended route. In the meantime, I'll be working on some plans/views of our location for your viewing pleasure and brainstorming.

ED: Does anyone have a favorite DF2010 visualizer? If so, post it and a link, please.

Stonesense it is, then. Here's the route for the next leg of the journey, just to show where we're ending up and how and all that.

Last journal entry is around the square. The last area Vucar has described is in the ring. This is cropped from the gynormous world map above. It's like Lewis and Clark up in nyah!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Meanwhile, let's have some fun with the fort location! This isn't where I've excavated currently; it's a natural cave where I'm going to locate the main fort. It goes down for at least 20 levels before connecting to the caverns, but for now, I've included the topside and the first five basement floors.

I'm thinking of making B5F the meeting hall because of the natural sapphire floor there. Any megaconstruction ideas or whatever for the main campus are welcome. It'll be an honor to do one.
