Katamari Dwarves
« on: May 11, 2010, 11:55:45 am »

I seem to have a few champion wrestles glued atop each other (ver 40).  One is of the royal guard and the other the fortress guard.  One hungry, one drowsy.  They are stuck sparring with each other while also both getting the red ? mark, obviously trying to get do their desired needs, but they don't stop flashing pink (sparring).  But now, someone from my basic military and one of their pet mules are standing next to them.  I guess the soilder wants to spar with one of them and the pet wants to be near them.  I'm afraid they might turn into one huge cluster of dwarves.

I'm thinking of trying:
1. forbid/unforbid a door to see if resetting their pathfinding pulls them apart.
2. build something overtop/under them.
3. reassign weapons and armor didn't work
4. let one die of hunger and watch the fun if the katamari grows.
5. channel the floor below them to wake them up (but will totally ruin the floor temporarily.

Any other ideas?

When they get stuck like this, the only thing that seems to fix them is knocking them unconscious or forcibly moving them.  Arrange for a nearby cave-in, or arrange for the floor they're on to fall one Z-level.  You can't channel directly under them however, because dwarves won't channel under other dwarves, so you'd have to channel around them and cause a small cave-in.

6.  Delete the barracks room to remove their sparring area.

Sometimes you can force a dwarf to move by building a statue there. Sometimes it doesn't work though.

Yes. Clearly a bug that ought to be fixed in the future, but exploit it in the meantime.

Go into the entity_default.txt file (I believe that's the right one) and find the entry to dwarves, and delete [THOUGHT]. Go back to your game, and every dwarf will instantly fall unconscious. Then save, go back to the file, re-add [THOUGHT] to the Dwarf entry, go back, and it should be fixed.

He's playing 28.40d. Can't he just deactive the two wrestlers? Just note their names so you can re-activate them later.

Non-activated dwarves won't spare in that version. So they might stop.

What is this, a therapy session? We don't need to console someone because they're upset about a fucking video game. Grow a beard, son, and take off those elf ears!

Flood the room. There should be two job cancellations due to dangerous terrain. Then you just smooth the floors back to normal. :)

I believe this is a reliable way (if it doesn't kill your dwarves) that won't endanger any other dwarf (the cave-in works, but there is a risk associated with it). You might also edit out the ability of hands to grasp. That could force them to let go... and everyone will drop everything they're holding, too.

When two wrestlers are locked together, removing the barracks doesn't help, in my experience. Maybe, if they aren't champions yet, you can take them out of the military to resolve it, but that's not a sure-fire solution.

My favourite solution - I tend to have fire extinguishing system, that can selectively flood any room. Sorts all kinds of problems with nobles, stuck dwarves, invaders, pets, incorrect magmaducts, berskers, parties ... and ... and ... one more thing ... eeh ... yeah! fires.
