I worshiped this game before it came out, it sounded fantastic. I got a day off from work just so I could play it on the release day.

I don't buy EA games anymore.

That sounds like a soul-destroying experience.

He probably finished it on his day off, though.

At least he didn't have to take another one off?

...That IS a soul destroying experience.

You guys might like to try the Creatures series, if you haven't already.

You will have to torrent it, though.
I agree on the first sentence.

The second is bogus though, you can get the Creatures games from GOG for 7 bucks or so. And if you have Vista or Windows 7, that is likely the best way to get them working.

PS: Like some, I strongly dislike having multiple threads on the same game (especially ones that already have massive threads), so posting to the "wrong" one makes my conscience hurt. Grragh.

PPS: My problem with civ stage and thus the "career mode" is that it requires a huge amount of creative input right from the start that matters very little and is used only for a short while. I never have a clear idea ready of what my civs buildings and vehicles should look like and when it all ends up boring and slapdash, I lose interest and won't touch the game for months.

I was so excited for Spore.  Dragging biting corpses, then moving to drag them?  Awesome!  Aquatic creatures and kingdoms?  Awesome!  Flying around empty space, alternately molding or smashing planets at will?  Awesome

Then it came out.

I -never- return or sell my games, just in case I want to play them again.  I returned Spore.

Sadfaced while ragefaced.

Cell phase really was the most fun.  Creature phase was alright - mostly because the editor was cool.  Tribal phase?  Alright, but damn, the editors are completely cosmetic now.

City phase was tedious.  And what?  I can only have one kinda vehicle of each type?  Lame.  Wait, the only peaceful thing for my planes are speakers that shoot pretty music from up in the atmosphere?

Space phase was unplayable.  I made friends with a nearby race, but every five minutes pirates attacked something of mine, and they were deadly as hell.  Despite full walls and defense guns to every city on my home world, they were -totally- incapable of defending themselves, and I was just as vulnerable as they were.  Trying to work my first colony's world such that it was livable was a chore devoid of fun with that BS going on - rushing three systems back home because my homeland can't afford to build a defense fleet, then jumping three systems back.  Then I'd have to fly over to each city and manually tell them to rebuild every thing - which took obscene amounts of money.  Sometimes both the homeworld and the colony would be under attack at the same time - until the colony fell, anyway.

Then while this crap was going on, my friends asked me for help against an aggressive invading race.  So I fly over, shoot at their ships, but Christ they tear me apart like nothing!  And while I'm fending off some raiders, I pop back out into the star map and notice my friends have vanished, their system now conquered and hostile.

So, constantly under devastating attack by pirates and hostiles, no free time to explore the universe, and no money due to repairs that cost more than my magical hammerspace-storage-enabled, free-energy spaceship, but were completely useless.

/quit

The lack of any sort of spaceship besides your dinky scouting thing was so lame, too.  No capital ships or space battles or specialized combat/trading/whatever functionalities.

What with all the raving of: Best evolution / space sim game ever...

It only came out a C to the expected AAA.  I was expecting at least B what with all the hoopla.
Then it came out...  I was skeptical with the backlash, so borrowed it a few months down the line...

Stage 1, Epic at first.
Stage 2, Ok, at first.
Stage 3, Super simplified not-so-tactical squad game?  Who cares if any of them die, faceless mooks... I can always make more with the baby generator as long as I feed it.
Stage 4, Super stupified for the masses RTS?  Boring carp here.
Stage 5, WTF! Why so many uber pirates!?  Why do my allies suck and why are the hostiles so strong?  Why is everyone asking me for help with stupid things they can do themselves?  Stupid consequences for not helping... with things any normal space faring race fix themselves...

The Evolution game was made by discovery channel (I believe), but I don't think its made anymore and it probably won't work on vista and windows 7. I actually still have the disk around somewhere and I know I have the bestiary and the manual, but I think I've lost the evolution map thing. Its a pretty good game really.

Its probably freeware or abandonware by now since it's at least 10 years old.

While I agree with you guys, the big WTF Screw This Game moment for me came in the Space Stage...

Not because of the pirates (who I smoked because I took my time to build up before exploring)...but because of the Terraforming.

See, Spore promised us the ability to terraform and mold planets exactly how we wanted. And you could! It was awesome. I made a flaming lava world in honor of Cthulhu, a lifeless world crowned by a central mountain that looked suspiciously like an octopus with its tentacles wrapped around the planet.

And that's when I discovered how badly they'd lied. See, there's a cap on how much terrain information each planet can store once you've left it. So I went over to my home world for some tools, in the same system, came back...

And 95% of the terraforming I'd done had been smoothed over and eliminated. There were echoes and hints of the stuff I'd done before, but it basically stores nothing once you leave the planet.

So I did some further testing. I went to an alien homeworld, and shot terraforming missiles into the earth until I had completely isolated a city by water. When I came back.....all the terrain had magically regrown around the city to provide it a link to the mainland.

If nothing else, I hoped Spore would be fun for lots of terrain modification and making goofy prison worlds and what not. It couldn't even do that right.

I missed most of the hype.

I figured it was worth my money. It was. It's fun, but not amazing.

Shame they screwed up Galactic Adventures. That just kinda sucked.

Murdering what could have been an epic cashflow on the same scale as the Sims?
The PR department was going all out too...  what a waste.
