Okay, well my position is that Spore is an excellent game for what it's intended to be... a big shiny colorful lighthearted toy.

They never billed it as a serious or hardcore space sim.

And you do not "go wander to find one obscure star in the galaxy". You go to the center of the galaxy. And to make it easier to get there you can do some putzing around the galaxy to make some money and upgrade your ship.

They billed it as a serious hardcore life sim, with serious and hardcore ecology, planetary and galaxy sim bits too.

Hence the suck.

Yes, it is long, but it portrays a very different spore than the one we received.

The problem with spore isn't that it's horrible, (It's mediocre at worst), but that everyone clings to that 2005 video.

Apparently I was ninjad to it.  Yeah, that video was very early in development, and probably half of the stuff people love on there was never actually implemented in a workable way, just mockups for the demo.

Oh the missions were broken. Horribly broken.

Find planet X orbiting Star Y, which is a few parsecs give or take around Star Z.

Why in gods name doesn't it just produce the co'ordinates for Star Y in the first place!? Half the time there simply IS no planet X within the designated zone.

The first stage is nice, fun, different but short.

The second stage is fun as well, until you realise that actually only the stats of each time matter and not how you build your creature. Also the tasks get repeatative.

The third stage is a fair short and dull cluster attack on the others type level, kinda pointless, a shame considering the potential there.

The fourth stage is effectively the same as the third.

The five stage, space, is a different game. Kinda fun if you just explore, the missions get on my nerves.

The devs released all this stuff in 2005, then never released anything about the game mechanics again. The closest they came was showing a creature running around killing things. They never said they took anything out. They purposfully tried to decieve people because they new the new spore would only get a couple thousand players. And that is without the DRM, effectivly a root-kit and also hidden from people.

EA caused all this so I don't plan on buying any EA games ever again.

Kay, so nothing new has happened since the discussion thread a year ago.

Thanks for the new thread guise.

I hoped it would be more like SimLife :(
Maybe we'öö see a Spore 2 that's like the game we imagined, there is still a lot of potential.

And while we wait for that:
What other good life simulations (except SimLife and DF) do you guys know that are worth playing?

I would be completely content with a game that focuses only on stage one, with a greater variety of body parts and the ability to expend the organism a bit more... and actual procedurally generated opponents, rather than the stock stuff that's in the game as is.

I would buy such a game, I would be happy with it. I would even go so far as to say: "You know what, no hard feelings about spore. It was a flop and I wasted my money on it, but at least you eventually made this game. I forgive you EA."

Alas, it's unlikely to happen, and I've been spoiled by the eye-candy and procedural animation stuff of Spore's version too much to accept the free, indie attempts at a similar type of game.

Will caved to a few jokes made by a couple other EA employees on the team and we ended up with cute spore. Suckage ensued and TED screamed in terror.

Did we really need a new thread for this?
