Judging by the tone of the article I wouldn't be surprised if the Russians left a special surprise in their boat. Can you terribly blame them? The problem is it's hard to blame a lot of people for being pirates in the first place- maybe they surrendered because they were only pressed into service in the first place?

tl;dr, war sucks.

Seems like a good way of punishing pirates to me, at least until somebody gets the ability to legally try them.

I'm sure they'd be nice people if they didn't live in an Anarchic state, but they're attacking ships and killing sailors, and that means fighting back by placing them on an inflatable boat in the middle of the ocean and letting them find their own way.

Okay, so, today this girl I know-Lauren, just took a sudden dis-interest in talking to me. Is she just on her period or something?

If the pirates WERE actually just given a rubber boat, with navigational equipment, that's probably more than they deserve.

Well, let's be fair, the pirates don't really get any profits themselves. The least we can do is give them some chance.

They werent given navigational equipment. They were released in open sea.
Five hours ago, here, on russian news, they told in unofficial announcement from navy, that pirates didnt make it to the shore, and probably already died.

They're not fighting a war, by the way. They're actually commercial pirates. Somalia is a film state and popularly studied as the closest form of Anarchy in the world. If these were soldiers, they would be on the land fighting Ethiopia.

I'm pretty sure they arn't trying to kill sailors, just make them hostages for more negotiation power.

Also, the Russians knew they were sending them to their doom.  They didn't dirty their own hands.  'They gave the Somalians a chance at freedom.'

And yea, there is no war going on.
There are no ships lobbing heavy (and sometimes explosive) objects at each other via high speed propellant, while people are on board anyways...

Hijackings commonly devolve into gunfights. People get shot all the time.

This story reminds me of the beginning of Pirates of the Carribean.

Simple answer: Don't shoot back, they don't want to kill you, just kidnap you.

Oh! Well in that case, I certainly don't mind being held hostage for several months until my home country either pays a ridiculous amount of money for me, sends in a military strike team with only a 50% chance I'll get killed in the rescue attempt, or decides I'm simply not worth the cost and abandons me.

Besides, the shipping companies are paying to get the *ship* back, and maybe the cargo. Crew are just a sundry expense.

I think they either need to start arming cargo chips (I'm not talking 5-inch guns, just a .30cal light MG on the bow and stern should be enough to discourage opportunistic pirates), or convoying them with armed escorts. Maybe the various navies in the region could divide the area into national sectors and make escort available for a reasonable fee (enough to pay for the deployment, and cheaper than ransoming your boat back).
