Recommend Me Movies
« on: May 10, 2010, 08:26:10 pm »

Recommend me some movies to download buy watch, guys. 99% of lists on the 'net are terribad and useless.

Any genre and any year (preferably not B&W, though, the person I'm watching them with does not enjoy them) but try and keep them exceptional movies.

Please do extrapolate on why you think they're good movies, too.

one of my fav. movies ever is Apocalypse Now, which is both entertaining, artistic, and deep. FMJ, which is simmilar, in some ways, is good as well, but less artistic.

Aliens, Groundhog Day, Holy Grail, Terminator 1 and 2, Clue, and Advent Children.

And just to include one Black and White, Strangelove.

Wasabi, a french movie starring Jean Reno in Japan. Action movie. Good stuff. I think the movie also guest stars the S&W .500.

The Barbarian Invasions
French-Canadian.  Absolutely beautiful movie.  There's another movie that's sort of a "prequel" to this, which is also pretty good.  This one is excellent.

Chocolat
Saw this again just last night.  Quite enjoyable, and a very nice soundtrack.  Although certainly not a chick flick, it's an excellent choice should you happen to be watching it with someone of the feminine persuasion.  Also a great movie if you happen to like chocolate.  Just sayin'.

Kingdom of Heaven
I happen to like this movie quite a bit.  If you're the kind of person who likes to fantasize about the middle ages (like me), then it should appeal to you...

Waking Ned Devine
Irish comedy.  Very fun to watch, and also has a wonderful soundtrack that can stand on its own.

The Shawshank Redemption
The likelihood of finding someone who hasn't seen this movie is somewhat slim, I know...  But I just want to make absolutely sure that this gem isn't passed over.  Heck, even if you have seen it, I'd recommend watching it again.  A god among mere mortals, this is a fantastic movie.  One of the very few film adaptations of a Stephen King story that's actually worth watching.

EDIT:  Oh yeah, since the Holy Grail was brought up, I'd like to shine some light on a far less well-known but equally (if not more) funny Pythonite film, Life of Brian.

I'll also cast my votes for the two films Realmfighter just mentioned.

I'm English, do you guys think I haven't watched Monty Python films? :P

Also, I'd really suggest you guys go watch Blackadder (series two to four), Vicar of Dibley, Father Ted, Fawlty Towers, Only Fools and Horses, Porridge, Open All Hours and the IT Crowd if you're looking for British comedies. They don't have the same craziness as Monty Python, but they should make you laugh. They have a much shorter run than American series, too, so it's not really an archive dive. Still, be warned, they're not movies. And, yes, ALL of those.

Well, most i would recommend have been said already/can't remember the name.
As said previously,Apocalypse now and FMJ were pretty good.Tears of the sun was an interesting movie in a similar vein, although it wasn't one of my favorites.

Braveheart, pretty good movie if I'm remembering correctly.
I almost never like Japanese themed movies, but the last samurai was good.
The thirteenth warrior was, good,if a bit lacking.Mostly enjoyed it for the viking elements, not too many movies that represent that particular culture.

I'm going to have to say army of darkness, too.cult classic and such.

One hour photo
Robin Williams plays a lonely photomat employee who becomes obsessed with a family he's watched develop through their photos. Returns to the style of the "lonely man" protagonist popularized by movies like "Taxi driver". One of my favorite movies for the way it makes you think. It has a surreal, detached feeling of drifting through a dream which quickly descends into nightmare.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Baraka
A documentary without words, baraka transports you all over the world from deep forest to the sweat shops of china and displays every angle of the human condition in vivid color. A very zen, relaxing and yet interesting movie.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Synecdoche New York
The story of a theater director who creates an entirely new world city and loses himself within his art, blurring the line between what is real and what is facsimile until the line no longer exists. One of those movies you may love or hate but you'll never forget.

Those are the good ones that come to mind. Now if you want "So bad it's funny" then check out Ankle Biters, the movie about 3 foot vampires. There's a down load in my review thread in general discussion.

I suspected as much, but they're still all totally awesome. Less obvious :

Leon - The Professional : Deadly french hitman adopts little girl. Hilarity ensues.
Battle Royale : Japanese schoolchildren fight to the death in a dystopian alternate reality bloodsport.
Ghost World : Scarlet Johansson and some other chick act antisocial, seduce old guy.
Rushmore : Underachieving private school boy attacks Bill Murray with bees, also some love subplot.
Ghost Dog and the Way of the Samurai : Hitman thinks he is samurai.
