Junk in my entranceway
« on: May 10, 2010, 01:33:11 pm »

My fort entrance is of course a corridor of traps.   I've got a lot of junk lying in the corridor (socks, sandals, vests, and the like) from invasions past cluttering it.  I've Reclaimed it so it's not Forbidden, and I've marked it to Dump (since I've got plenty of junk like that stored to fob off on the caravans), but the dwarves won't take it and won't dump it.  Nor is the area in question outside.

I'm at a loss.  Why won't they throw this stuff away for me?

Do you have a dump zone set up?  In order for your dwarves to dump items, there has to be a zone they can reach marked for dumping.  Preferably next to a hole with magma or a dwarven atomsmasher at the bottom, so you can destroy the dumped junk.

Oh, sure, I've dumped plenty of other stuff.  Rocks, bodies, what have you.  Only these few piles seem to be immune.  I've got multiple dump zones, though most are simple pits, only one is a magma pit.

I'm not sure why it's worth the effort to set up an atom smasher.

Which is begging the question - why do you care if something is gone forever, or merely in a pit marked as forbidden?  Does it affect frame rate?  I suppose it does clutter the "stocks" screen full of the weird junk the goblins and trolls wear.

Does it affect frame rate?
Does it exist? If the answer is yes, then yes it does. If the answer is no, then it might anyway.

Yes. Clearly a bug that ought to be fixed in the future, but exploit it in the meantime.

Check to see if someone owns it.  Dwarves are picky about handling the belongings of other people, at least until they're dead.

Then they're probably Owned by a dwarf.  In the new version goblin clothes fit dwarves, and dwarves will claim clothing the moment the former owner dies.  Give each dwarf a bedroom with chests and cabinets and enough free time to pick up their new used goblin blood stained clothes and put them away.  (Actually, you don't need the chests and cabinets, but without them the dwarves will just leave their stuff on the bedroom floor.)

You have to allow refuse gathering from outside, assuming the entrance is considered outside.

Its likely this.  To double the annoyance, when you mark something to be dumped the now owner won't pick it up to store it, but of course no one will dump it.  So it an owned, marked to be dumped item will sit wherever it is, forever, every dwarf terrified of touching it.

Wouldn't forbidding and designating for dumping solve that? Or doesn't dumping cancel forbid?

Chances are that junk is all the discarded posessions of dwarves.  Unfortunately there is absolutely nothing you can do about it other than hiding it (d-b-h iirc) because dwarves wont mess with others posessions.
