Contaminant Cleaning Solution
« on: May 09, 2010, 04:11:31 pm »

Dwarves are quite slack when it comes to cleaning up contaminants right now. Some of these contaminants can actually be quite dangerous too, especially forgotten beast blood. Therefore it's important to be able to get rid of contaminants before they're spread around too much.

To that end, share your experiences with cleaning up contaminants.

My best solution so far is constructing roads. Roads, when constructed over a patch of blood, will destroy the contaminants completely, meaning your dwarves don't even have to get close to the stuff in order to get rid of it.

dfhack and mods:
dfcleanmap.exe - for fluids
crematorium mod - for not rotting remains (w/o ash as a product, treat it as a "insta atom-smash")
dfliquids.exe - to solve all other bugs in 0.31.03 (soil without mud? put water on it, never ending surgery? put 1/7 magma on patient bed... always works)

Flame me but I don't see that as a cheating but as a way to walkaround till 0.31.04 will be released

This.  Dwarfy and effective.  Showers at every entrance :).

That's a good idea, may result in melting dwarfs if they go near magma after the shower though.

Currently I've got a problem where my well and hospital is covered in blood, of all kinda of things, including FB ichor.  The brook after it passes under the well is then washing blood onto the bridge/ford thingy which is a path to my fort entrance so dwarfs trail even more blood back in crossing the bloody brook.

Quite annoying.

dfliquids has the old "teleport" bug. Tiles become unbuildable.

Give this man a quality hooker and one thousand dollars.
As for actual tips, I can think of:
- Is not getting covered in blood in the first place. Don't get up & close if possible. Use ranged weapons and traps instead.
- I wonder if the Bucket Squad could clean up blood? The same one that handled the initial irrigation of the farm plot. Might require digging though.
- Or why not just try to build your fortress so that it can be flooded and drained in orderly fashion, without drowning anyone.
- Could it be possible to build a shower room? A room, with a flooded room above that, and a hatch that's connected to a lever. Do this for every room in your the fortress.
- Or maybe a room with a pool in it. An entrance with a pool!

I can't be held accountable if any of these things don't work or are impractical. I'm a newb.

Trouble is that forgotten beasts aren't affected by traps, and ranged weapons are next to useless on them. You have to get up close to kill it.

Upright spikes work perfectly well, as long as the beast can die. Failing that, reroute magma; if that doesn't work, cover it in water, and then mine the corpse out of obsidian. Dropping a solid shaft of rock on it should work as well, if you can convince it to stand still. Or drop it off a bridge into magma; even if it survives, it won't be able to get out.

If your traps don't work, you're not trying hard enough.

I have a decontaminate chamber setup between the cave entrance and the fort proper.  Dwarves go in, doors are locked, water fills the chamber, then is drained.  Haven't had a reason to use it yet, but it should work.  Though, as mentioned earlier, may result in boiled dwarf flesh.  But hey, better than the plague.
