Current Residents
« on: May 09, 2010, 03:59:00 pm »

Alright. I was looking for a location to site my fort by looking at the detailed bitmap map, and came across a single black pixel near the goblin wastes. Interested, I saw that the location had a name. Said I, "Oh, I bet that's a cave! I wonder what I'll find."
The answer? A whole lot of phat lewt, amassed and guarded by Faci Akeracaci Ciquarafaci, dragon. She hasn't moved from her spot so far (in a lovely glade near the mouth of her cave, which is also home to a family of troglodytes), and it's been about a month or so.

Well, this got me to thinking. What are YOUR favorite strategies for resident megabeasts?

Me, it looks like I might as well just play live-and-let-live with ol' Faci up there, so long as I can. Or, for added Fun, build my outer castle out of the bituminous coal that's all over the mountain; I haven't decided.

Drown it. With magma. And cave-ins.

Okay, now a question. Does the dragon do nothing without provocation?

It will attack any dwarf it sees.

I had an ettin to deal with on one embark. Took me 4 embarks to finally kill her since i was so pathetic at it, and she became invisible upon returning each time, so I then had to find her. Or them... If ettins have multiple heads, and each head has it's own totally seperate mind, then it would be plural right? If they all shared the same conscience, then wouldn't it be considered singular? Questions...

Well, you The Hydra had 7 heads, so An Ettin should be correct.

I once had a fort in the snows with a cave, and a minotaur.  My dwarves walled themselves in while the dogs chased the minotaur around.

The minotaur killed the dogs.
Then... the migrants came.

At least she's quick to heal...

Okay. Named beasts are not affected by traps, the wiki says. Does this count even when they are knocked unconscious onto the trigger like other [TRAPIMMUNE]s? I'm beginning to hatch a plan.

You mean the same plan I used to capture the entirety of a 40d HFS pit?

open space and floor are displayed as they are ingame.

Sadly, this doesn't work anymore. Building destroyers don't attack supports anymore.

Having the dragon attack it didn't even enter my mind. I was thinking of attaching the support(s) to a lever. I lure the dragon in, collapse the support or supports, and have myself a monster in a can.

When you do, can you tame it?

owait, you'd need a dungeon master... Make the bookkeeper [TAMES_EXOTICS]!

I only had the enemy attack the supports because that way I didn't have to pay attention to the demons. They just kinda went *punch* *cage* *punch* *cage* etc. down the line of 31 that I built.

I've thought of taming it, actually, but based on my understanding of how tame named creatures can go wrong, I don't think I'd trust it for anything, especially since my fort is practically made of coal. Perhaps I'll put the cage in the cavern she'd claimed. Sounds like a kickass meeting hall, there, with the natural sapphire floor and a shining cage with a terrible, majestic beast in the center, maybe artifacts around it...

That's it. My current enclave is only temporary lodging until the dragon is captured and the troglodyte troop dealt with. It must be done.

They only get names if they kill one of your fort's dwarves. Not your civ's, just the fort's.

You don't actually have to worry about the coal unless it's already mined out, in which case it would just catch on fire for a while.

I was worried about the fire. Then I realized that I wasn't thinking like a dwarf.
