Caverns + Water = ?
« on: May 09, 2010, 01:55:19 pm »

I have some caverns with some unfriendlies inside. I have some rivers.

Can you see where I'm going with this?

My main concern is removing the water after I'm finished "irrigating" the caverns. Can 5 or so z-levels of water ever evaporate?

Hi!

Nope, water will only evaporate if it is 1/7 in a tile. So you would need to reduce the water depth somehow.
Unless you got very small caverns or only need to flood a very small area, cleaning up afterwards will probably be a challenge.

EDIT: Basically, you would need to get some of the water into an area where it can spread so much as to have at least some 1/7 tiles, wait for it to evaporate completely and then move the next batch. This could be accomplished via a system of at least two floodgates or by pumping parts of the water.

Most of it will drain off the map, but you may still have to pump out any water that is trapped in low lying areas.

Also, more unfriendlies will come through the sides of the map afterwards. Unless you're talking about the occasional animalman civ that you can get.

Hello! So would it have to be:

R111R
RRRRR

Where 1 = water depth and R = rock, or would

R1111R
R7777R

Evaporate at the topmost layer?

From the sides of the map... Inside the cavern?

Yes.

Although depending on what you're trying to clear out, it won't work on those that are amphibious.

Also, you'll need to account for any downward passages since those will expand the area you need to flood, exponentially.

Unless the cavern is completely walled off, more will enter. And yes the one water on top of a level of 7 water will evaporate

If your caves go off-map, not-nice things (spoiler-beasts, GCS's, general animals) can migrate on and off map through them. Water/magma will also drain off. The best thing to do in that case would probably be to wall off the edges except for a single lever-controlled floodgate, fill, drain via floodgate and wall over that to prevent building destroyers from knocking it down.

True, but at a certain velocity the resulting explosion expels invader-bits at fatal speeds. You don't want to be dropping trogdolyte-shaped shrapnel bombs into your boneworks.
Only in Dwarf Fortress...

Heh, sounds like if the military screen was working properly, it would be much easier (and far less a FPS drop) to just send your military in than to attempt flooding the caverms.

From the replies so far, I think "Kill it with water," is shaping up to be a good substitute for the military that's so buggy at the moment, if done right.

I'm also looking forward to setting up a lever that, when pulled, will cause the rivers to enter my fortress through several points.

Now I just need to work out why I'm looking forward to the above.

The good thing is that you can wall off every side of cavern that connects to 'outside' (which is different than aboveground where you can't place walls near sides... but bridges works :>) to stop them from spawning.

In my latest "test" game I walled off entire underground map (2x2 embark) except for specially prepared spot which was in emergency flooded with magma and then with water from top... beautiful obsidian statues of forgotten beasts! (and a sh.t load of minor underground dwellers cough in cages)

Water evaporates when in contact with magma. There is magma on your map... you know what the dwarf way is.
