I still think they're tribbles. The mental image of you killing a Bronze colossus with a cooing ball of fur is amusing to say the least.
But, I guess the raws say they're humanoid now.

They could have incredibly tiny limbs and still look like little balls of fluff. Would explain their stumbling and bumbling.

Apparently they don't weigh that much. Like <1 lb. But, in their raws, there is some like that makes them sharp... Sharper than anything in the world... Kind of like the Subtle Knife in the Golden Compass series. It can cut between atoms in an object.

So to answer the question of it being a melee weapon, be prepared for severing every limb on contact!
