Cut random gem, encrust with random gem
« on: May 09, 2010, 03:37:32 am »

Quite simply, on the workshop I think it'll be very convenient to simply have a "cut ANY gem" rather than having to go through every gem and do a repeat order.  This would be in addition to the normal use, so if you want to save the diamonds or whatever until you're a high skill level you can go ahead and cut the cruddy ones directly.  Same goes with encrust.

UPDATE: Better than random is this, suggested below:

It's an excellent suggestion. It's up to the player to keep their stockpiles of raw gems safe with the forbid feature.

The wiki lists several grades of gems:
  • Synthetic
  • Ornamental
  • Semi-Precious
  • Precious
  • Rare
Allowing the work orders system issue orders such as "cut ornamental gems" would be a nice addition to this.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Mainly because it would be a waste of time. Almost no-one wants to let their dwarves go loose with all the gems in their fort. There's no real purpose to this suggestion.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

Handy.

You have 13 gems to be cut.

You order 'cut any gem' x10.

And go with the fortress, not really about the jeweler who is happy enough to do his work.

I approve :P

my shops are filled with various cut stones, and the stockpiles are overflowing with cut and uncut gems.  I generally set it to cut one of each going down the pages, or to repeat a few times.

Of course, with random gem, the jeweler may decide to pick the gem up on the farthest away tile that a gem had been dug out of... at least, that what it seems my web collectors do.  Walk right past the webs on cavern level 1 and go down and across a dozen zlevels to pick webs next to the spider.  Great going

Yeah, some annoying things could happen, but the option would be there for people like me who want to use it.  Maybe I didn't make it clear enough, but the option to do individual gem types would still be there.  E.g. Your jewelers workshop might look something like this:

Cut agates
Cut diamonds
Cut any gem

And yeah I agree with Pilsu, it would be really awesome if cut <gem category> gem were also allowed.

Is there any use for rough gems?

So we got monsters above, monsters below, dwarves in the middle and a party in the dining hall. Sounds good to me.
If all else fails, remember one thing:  kittens are delicious, nutritious little goblin-baiters, cavern explorers, and ambush-finders.

They're used in moods and for making crystal glass. Not sure if there's any other purpose.

99% of the time I just want to spam any low value gems I have to generate work and so on but want to keep the diamonds for moods and decorating special projects (masterwork gold statues and so on)

Or you could just merge the two and have the tasks at the jeweler's workshop only have these categories available for cutting and encrusting, instead of the whole listing of individual gem types. Unlike masonry, where not having control over which specific type of rock gets used means you get furniture of wildly varying or sadly uniform color, there's not much of a difference between the various gems other than their value. I wouldn't mind less granularity in exchange for more convenience.

Almost no-one wants to let their dwarves go loose with all the gems in their fort.

I often want to do exactly that.  So yeah, I like this idea.

Why not have the Synthetic, Ornamental, Semi-Precious, Precious, and Rare options, but also an option called "cut/encrust specific gem" that would bring you to the screen we're all familiar with in case there is someone like me who likes micromanaging the gems used?

Oh, this would be rather handy. I usually forbid my 'rarest' gem, and just cut/encrust everything else. :)
