Actually you could probably get an accurate measure as to the sex of the brains by looking at the estrogen and testosterone levels in them. There's probably also some physical differences (as a result of the aforementioned hormones) if you know where to look.

I assumed you'd just be a brain. Maybe with some sensory apparatus and arms connected to the tank that let you move around and operate things.

Smoking without a respiratory system does pose problems.  I'm assuming that this (communal) brain-vat functions as a replacement circulatory system by just floating in a blood-surrogate liquid.  Y'know, like ya do.  And I think "smoking" and "communal brain tank", the first thing that comes to my mind is "water bong".

Measuring the hormone levels only works if the brains have all their glands left. And depending on your setup, the hormones might leak into the brain vat and seep into the other brains there, making any measurements pretty unreliable. Gender differences aren't very drastic, anyway, once your testicles or ovaries have been processed into fertilizer. It's not like it would matter. Let's have a huge gay brain orgy!

And speaking of chemicals seeping, we'd probably want a separate smoking tank for those who want nicotine injected into their synthetic blood.

 Just set up a fishtank air bubbler thingy attached to a tube feeding through a lit cigarette. Presto, tar-covered water your brain can directly absorb. Fantastic.

 And I'm rather sure we will have to depend on our VR personas to get it on with other brains, thus maintaining our intelligence and gender.
