How do you utilize magma 100 zlevels down?
« on: May 08, 2010, 07:48:58 pm »

Really, I suppose the best way to do it is make 100 screw pumps, but I'm not up to building a pump stack that takes like half an hour to build/power/etc.  Atm, I'm just chopping everything down and using what bituminous coal I get :)

I have my forges all the way down there, but I don't bunk my smiths down there. Every day they make the long commute down the staircase to the magma ocean.

It helps that I don't have multiple caverns...

If you don't want to bother with pumping (laggy as well as time consuming and dangerous) Then your best bet is to use the trees. Or you could modify one of the smelting reactions in the raws that you know you won't care about to say this:
Code: [Select]
[NAME:dead vermin to coke]
[BUILDING:CREMATORIUM_EB:NONE]
[REAGENT:1:REMAINS:NO_SUBTYPE:REMAINS:NO_MATGLOSS]
[PRODUCT:25:1:BAR:NO_SUBTYPE:COAL:COKE]
[SKILL:SMELT]

Which will allow you to turn vermin corpses into coke.

Burrow for smiths? ARMOK COMMANDS DWARVES TO LIVE DEEP.

Seriously, it is easier to move the whole fort. What do you need the surface for? Let the traders walk.

When you think about it, distance wise 100 z-levels really isn't any worse than walking across a mid-size fort.

That makes me wonder, how deep down in the earth can you go before the elven traders start freaking out about the depth?

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.

One z-level straight down is the same as moving one tile on the same plane.

I would probably do a mix of the "100 pump stack" and "forge industry burrow." I'd pump it up as much as was reasonable, then go from there. Realistically, however, I would probably go without magma because my machine SUCKS.

I've got my main living space at about 60 below, and the forges at 115 below.  Works fine.

temporary wood/coal powered smelters and forges near the surface. I genned a map without the bottom layer, so the magma is only around 29-30 z levels down. currently building a little smelter area there. perhaps will pump it about 10z levels up to a more convinient area. Or just use wood/coal all the way.

Pumping slows the game to a crawl. So I just made beds, a tiny dining hall, a well and a meager food stockpile near the magma for my metalworkers. Sometimes they choose to stay down there, sometimes they come back to the main fort. I let them decide.
