I want to have a very deep fortress, e.g. as soon as i get native version i'll build all the industry, living quaters, etc near the magma ocean. the main problem will be with glass production, but well who cares, metal is better for the armok needs.

Whenever i read the "doesn't care about anything anymore" line, i instantly imagine a dwarf, sitting alone on a swing set. Just slowly rocking back and forth, somberly staring at the ground, and stopping every once in a while to sigh.
It's mildly depressing.

I haven't even bothered digging that far down.  Mild OCD compels me to dig my tunnels downward as a 3x3 room, with ramps in two of the three sets of squares (So there's one-tile wide of floor tiles), and that it must all be smoothed before we dig further down.  It takes forever.  I'm not doing that all the way to the magma.  If it won't come up to me, I won't go down to it.  Same for HFS.

I situate my entire fortress between the magma sea and the third cavern layer and use the third cavern for farming.

More specifically, I wall myself off from the third caver, and then dog a shelf on the edge of the water with no ramps, and use a pump to irrigate it so I farm safely and in peace.

As another said. I let the caravans come to me through a brand new state of the art ultra-trap tunnel.

Personally, I'm now working on the multiple-migration strategy with my forts. Step one: Camp outside. Step two: Shallow fortress. Step three: Dig too greedily and too deep. Move fortress further underground. Abandon the upper chambers almost completely.

Do you start your fortress out down there to begin with, and if so, how much difficulty do you have with critters?  A giant spider and a cave crocodile on the same cavern level can ruin your day.

Pumping it is better in the long term; it gives you an infrastructure for magma traps when the sieges get really bad.

I usually just wall off all the sections of cavern I plan on using as soon as I'm going down there.

When you think about it, distance wise 100 z-levels really isn't any worse than walking across a mid-size fort.

This. I still don't think that people have fully adapted to z-levels yet because a lot of people still can't seem to wrap their heads around 10z down being closer than 15x across.

actually, now that I think about it, wouldn't locating your fortress in the very center of the map and z-levels be the best? I this case, you'd be equidistant from any mined resources.  Assuming you use lots of different metals, and not mainly just iron and adamantine.

First fortress in 31.x I built near the surface, dug down, discovered the wonderful open caves sometime in the second year, started moving down there, discovered the wonderful fun, abandoned.

Second fortress I dug a narrow staircase straight down right away; by the end of summer I was establishing farms and workshops at 60 below -- pretty much the middle of the map indeed.  And I was walling off the fun while keeping a decent-sized tree farm.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
In the winter, I dug down to the magma at 110 below and excavated the forges.  By the second summer I had caravan access all the way down to 60z and not much later I was smelting like a madman.

It would be kind of fun to have a few different burrows.  Top one for trade, middle one for food, bottom one for forges.  Get the sand up top; dump it down a chute all the way to the forges.  I've been seeing iron ore be mostly near the surface, so that would be good for a chute also.

I plan on getting a military going and fighting through the tunnels, then having a sole ramp from the surface down for traders and having my whole fort down there. and desperately avoiding adamantine.

Not with a pump stack.
