Next version should be mac compatible. And the devlog says:

The original game seems to be working fine after all the merge changes, but I still need to iron out some bugs that come up after the code is put into place with the SDL stuff. If I'm lucky it'll be up tomorrow, but it'll depend on the fixes. The drudge work is pretty much handled now though (drudge-work-wise, I just need to convert the 0.31 key defs since they are in a different format in the SDL version).

Tommorow, maybe. But soon.

I've been curious about this: how exactly does the SDL stuff relate to the Mac/Linux port?

If what I remember is true, the OpenGL that DF used is OS dependent or something like that. The SDL code makes the ports easier or something. Footkerchief knows the specifics.

It was nice, in the FotF thread when we could just summon up Footkerchief for answers :)

Toady really needs to have posted a Linux/Mac version not available (use WINE) notice. We get a new thread like this every day.

SDL is a cross platform library for software development. So once the input/output code was ported to SDL DF was available on Mac and Linux. In that branch was also an update to use OpenGL for graphics rendering, giving people a good boost in speed in some cases.

That branch was not merged into the .31.x code because everyone was salivating for the new release, so the first build of .31 was Windows only. Now that Toady is almost done with the merge there should be concurrent releases on all OSes from now on.

Ah, I see. Nifty.

(use WINE)

I can't; my Mac is too obsolete (PowerPC, not Intel).

I'm tempted to answer "never" to the whole question of DF on Mac. We've been waiting for full months after the PC users got DF.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

Ah. Sadness. Still, it looks like succor is imminent. I'll be happy to abandon WINE, the game plays at full speed, but it takes around a minute to spawn the window at start.

That would be a false answer. There's no hurry to support compatibility for people who insist on buying computers that are not compatible with most programs. Presumably, if you cared that much, you could set up a windows box somehow. If you can't, well... people with no computers aren't supported either. Being poor (or cheap) is recognized as having issues. Nevertheless, there will be a Mac compatible version long before there is a version for those who cannot afford any computer at all.

I can't tell if either of you know this, but Toady is working on the merge right now.  It's probably going to be out in a day or two.  That means Mac port.

Its means easily able to Mac port, not instant Mac port. (unless Toady releases both .31.04 AND .31.# Mac port at the same time)

It's especially sad that they seem to ignore it when it's the first reply in the thread.   [And also a stickied thread at the top of the forum]
