So, alot of you are probably going to be like *sigh* when you read this, as I guess it's an old and common topic lol.

But anyway, to the point, of course I've been playing and have a second fortress going on 40d, stopped playing 2010 for obvious buggy reasons. My dwarfs have made a few artifacts, a couple pieces of nice furniture and a weapon rack, makes an awesome room for a nobile, grand/grand/opulant. Anyhow I noticed this stoneworker dude going crazy and making something, then he produced me an item worth about 137,000!, just wondered are these things hard to get ? what could I possibly do with such a valued item ?

Idols? Nothing practical you can really do with 'em. Make a special artifact vault in the depths of your fortress maybe?

Hmm how would I go about doing that ? i.e how would I get it so the artifacts are placed there ? I'm guessing there is some kind of option in the stockpiles?

Look through your stocks screen until you find it; if I'm correct there's a search function you can use.
Go to where it's been stockpiled.
Go and make your vault, and put a 1x1 stockpile in it.
Using the 'take from' function of the vault stockpile, go and get your artifact idol and have it moved to the vault.
Lock it up in a manner that the next adventurer who comes along can use it to buy out an entire city.

Edit: Yeah, craft artifacts are useless, save for bumping up your craftdwarfs' skills and making your fortress more of a magnet to goblin invasions.

I don't think you can lock things away so that they're in a guaranteed location. They'd just be spread out across the map.

I make Spellcrafts!
I have no idea where anything is. I have no idea what anything does. This is not merely a madhouse designed by a madman, but a madhouse designed by many madmen, each with an intense hatred for the previous madman's unique flavour of madness.

True. Although if you use a lead/platinum bin I would think that the shifting should be minimal, for I think said shifting is based on the weights of the items involved.
The buying out of an entire city is still applicable though.
