Ok, just happened to find that water beast, that one wasnt the dust one (it is beware of its webs). Is there an easy way I can look at history to see if there was something special about that giant?

Think like House!

What contaminants cause rotting livers?

I think it's Lupus.

Q: What do you get when you take 100 clear glass windows, 1000 silver bars, 6700 gold bars, and 18,000 marble blocks?

A: A very large wall.

Hi!

Unless the contaminant was an inherent part of the giant, I don't think you will find anything in the gamelog.txt file.
However, if it were related to a kill during world gen, looking at the loot would help. Unless it has changed in 31, world gen kills should create crafts that the one who killed the thing carries with them, as in having killed a goblin, the giant may carry a goblin bone earring with him.

But we can't really be sure that it was the giant. What other "interesting" things have visited places your dwarves have visited? After all, this disease has shown some lag, so there is no telling when the contamination actually began.

Virtually nothing at all, other than run of the mill cavern creatures, I've only had one forgotten beast really attack me before this and there was nothing special about that one.

And about lag time, not really, since two of the dwarves in the migrant wave during the worst part of the outbreak have needed to be quarantined now.

I think about 40 dwarves and maybe 60 animals have died from this thing now..

edit: went into the gamelog, the forgotten beast with the deadly dust came well before the Giant, and has had no contact with my fortress or dwarves.

This is certainly weird. If the ill dwarves aren't coughing up blood and the illness isn't then contractible by contact, then it would have to be airborne, and you'd be able to see the things spewing smoke.

Check the ill dwarves' clothing or contaminants. Forbid your dead, if they're stealing clothes from them. That could conceivably stop a lot of the spreading.

Glad I'm not the only one who thought of that!

At any rate, am I the only one who thinks this is kind of awesome? You literally have an epidemic spreading in your fortress and you have to stop it! That's an opportunity few of us get, and it sounds like a lot of fun!

Standard procedure would be to isolate/quarantine any infected dwarves and animals, try to make sure nothing from them gets to the rest of your dwarves. If that doesn't work... do something with magma.

... do something with magma.

Oddly enough I was starting to lay out my magma production, pump stack, and dwarf-made channelings (since there is alot of open air cavern space where i want magma to be) when this bit of fun started.

Good thing the moutainhome has not heard of this yet, else migrants would stop coming and I would be lacking in some critical skill sets! I do hope my liaison does not fall ill on his next visit...

What you do is wall off the infected. THE NEEDS OF FEW OUTWEIGH THE MANY!

If it is a dust, washing your dwarves will clear up the contaminant and will be a much more reliable way of stopping the outbreak than just quarantining the sick: the disease is transferred by the dust itself, and the rotting liver may be only a late-stage symptom.

Even having them stand outside in the rain might wash it off.

Here's an idea: designate the main fortress as one burrow and designate a completely separate area as another one. Have all your current dwarves stay in the first burrow and assign all your new immigrants to the second one. That way, you'll be able to keep the new (and healthy) dwarves separate, ensuring that your fortress will live one.

That would be useless if even one square in the main fort is infected with whatever

Have you got a hospital set up?  If so, have any afflicted dwarves been diagnosed?

Oh, okay- now I see your first post again.  Right.  A fortress-wide bath sounds like a great idea to me!

Why is it that the option of basic hygiene is considered a last resort?

True dwarfs hate cleanliness of course!

Try quarantining anyone with even the smallest part of the disease in a room that will never be opened again.  Then set everyone else to cleaning and give your fortress a good scrub down.
