If the dwarves were on their own..
« on: May 08, 2010, 12:34:15 am »

"what would a typical dwarven pioneer expedition actually DO, and how would they go about doing it?"
Really, what would they do if we weren't there? (Ignore what actually happens in the game if you start a new fort then just leave it unpaused, we already know that.)

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.

Same thing as NPC forts: Dig a hole in the ground and just hand out all day.

Dig, plant, harvest, brew and dig.  And tantrum, sometimes.

Hi!

I think they would probably dig out rooms beneath the earth, plant plants and get their industries up and running, so as to have trade goods for all the caravans (including elves) and also to have weapons and armor to fend off the attacks of any enemies.

The ethics of the dwarf entity and also the flavor text when you start a fortress indicate a much more positive attitude towards their fellow dwarves and other people than what many discussions here on the forums indicate. This is why I think it wouldn't be half bad.

I think these would be their priorities:

1) Survive.
2) Mine for precious metals and gems.
3) Train soldiers to defend them.
4) Built a mountainhall to be proud of.
5) Good food, good beer, and social activities.

Dwarves are greedy, but also proud and practical. Leisure and frivolities come last on the list.

... although the alcohol-powered DF dwarves might consider 'good beer' as part of survival, lol.

They would first build a massive, highly successful civilization deep underground. As their population and technology increased, they would eventually create a sentient AI which exists in a 64 bit hydro-computer.

They just play dumb when the player is watching.  8)

I did once.  Think I needed that embark anywhere to do it though.

They pretty much just milled around while I converted their fortress into something actually defensible.

Looks like NPC Dwarves are the exact opposite of Player Controlled Dwarves.

Build a big square fort several z-levels deep with lots of down staircases around the edges.  Stand around in or near the fort.   :P

if they're the king, hide so adventurers can never find you to ask for quests.

Or stand on top of said fortress.

They would all be on fire within twenty minutes, even if they were in the middle of a blizzard on a glacier with no magma.

Well in my fort, they prefer to spend their time endlessly littering and moving things from shops to barrels and bins back to shops.

If someone is wounded, they will refuse to feed the dwarf, but if that dwarf dies of dehydration or hunger, then a dwarf standing next to him who otherwise was busy with a stockpile command will immediately snatch the body.  Despite ignoring the pleas for hunger for many dwarfen seasons.
