16x16 characters are cartoonish. If you want to have something at least a bit smoothed, you'd better try at least 21x21.

Okay, that actually is pretty cool.

I think I could get into big tiles.

Bump with cats:

I'm getting a vibe that I just can't do low res sprites, but I kind of like my larger sprites.
One of the good things about larger tiles is that you can suggest different sizes better, so the 64x64 cat only takes up just over half that space, though it's still enough to add more detail compared to the smaller cats.

paxanadu, where you at? Any progress with your own stuff?

16x16 characters are cartoonish. If you want to have something at least a bit smoothed, you'd better try at least 21x21.

Your memory will hate you if you use 21x21  ???
Any texture works best at multiples of eight because it means the blocks are aligned in memory (and so faster to access), which is why 8, 16, 24, 32, etc. come up so often. 21x21 would potentially need to read the same amount of memory as 24x24 and then re-align the data.

It will be interesting to see what people come up with for the merge version. Tile resolution will only be limited by your graphics card memory, so you could have high-detail tilesets... or high-res anti-aliased ASCII ;D.
