Ever want to mine out all that precious adamantine, but didn't want to accidentally release a hoard of demons upon this mortal plane? Just follow these easy steps:
1. Smooth the adamantine walls.
2. Carve fortifications in the walls.
3. If the opening in the pipe is behind the fortification, it'll be uncovered, and you'll be safe from the demons, since they can't actually reach you dwarves.
4. Dig out safe fortifications.
5. Repeat until you mine out all the adamantine you want, or you uncover hell, in which case the rest of the opening will be revealed, so you'll know where it is safe to dig.

Warning: has not been thoroughly tested. Results may vary.

You'll still get FPS death from the demons constantly trying to get in your fort.

I thought maybe you could dig away a layer of adamantine and then cave in some natural walls to check if it was solid on the level underneath, but I suspect it simply checks if one of those open tube tiles has been revealed, rather than checking if there is actually an empty space leading out.

You'll just have to be careful and not too greedy, which is how it should be.

The hollow part of the vein is always 2x2 tiles, and overlaps the hollow on the layer below on at least 1 of those 4 tiles. Knowing that, you can work out which tiles are definitely safe if you don't want to take risks.

Luckily steam demons are one of the only demon types that are vulnerable to magma, and even seal the HFS for you.

Safest way is to wall off the miner. Just build solid block walls behind him. Then have him dig as long as you dare. Periodically tear down the wall to let the miner eat/drink and to also recover the adamantine. Then seal him back up in there and have him dig a bit more.

Worst that happens is that you lose the miner as well as the adamantine dug out during that digging attempt.

I've only revealed the HFS once in the new version. How exactly does it work - it seemed to reveal downwards from where I dug - does that mean that there was no tube above me and I just happened to hit the top level?

There was no tube, but the vein could continue above you and be completely solid.  I've seen pillars with 20-z levels of solid HFS before you breach the hollow part.

The height of the tube is random. It could go all the way to the top, or it could be below the magma ocean itself.
