Named items... are annoying
« on: May 06, 2010, 11:28:57 pm »

So I had a child wrestle with a forgotten beast until he reached legendary fighter/wrestler, and then get his arm hacked off.

The forgotten beast is now wearing his leather glove, and eternally fighting with a dog.

It became attached to the glove, which is how I first discovered he was using it.

Then he named it, again, and again, and again -.-

These are within like 10 seconds of each other, will it stop? T.T

Not until it dies.

On the upside, it has an arm, so it's probably one of the killable forgotten beasts.

That's the great thing about this forum. We can derail any discussion into any other topic.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

This is a common bug, but (in this case) exceptionally awesome.

There's a setting to turn off renaming announcements, I think... either in the orders menu or the init file.

No, It wont stop,  I've had the same issue with a cavern dweller that managed to kill a forgotten beast.  The trouble being that I couldn't kill her as she was now friendly.  It was so annoying I ended up abandoning.

If it's friendly then it is super easy to fix that problem with some water, magma, or cave in.  :D

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

Oddly, in my games, no one has ever named their weapon (or get attached to equipment for that matter.) I don't fight much though.

I had an antwoman kill a forgotten beast, and become attached to her shield. Unfortunately she died of old age shortly after, at the ripe old age of 4. :'(

Put item namer in cage.
Put cage in room.
Assign lever to cage.
Ensure cage and mechanism will not melt.
Fill room with magma.
Pull lever.
Put magma back where you found it.
Still have everything except for the offending item namer.

I'm curious what the barely conscious ai wrote about.
Well that went better than expected.  He went nuts and punched a rabbit to death, then the dogs and the whole dining hall ripped him to shreds.

Guys.

Data>init>annoucements.txt

Change [NAMED_ARTIFACT:A_D:D_D:BOX:P:R] to [NAMED_ARTIFACT:A_D:D_D]

You'll get an announcement, but it won't pause or recenter. No need to kill a friendly who's helping out your fort  :-\.

True, but at a certain velocity the resulting explosion expels invader-bits at fatal speeds. You don't want to be dropping trogdolyte-shaped shrapnel bombs into your boneworks.
Only in Dwarf Fortress...

So we got monsters above, monsters below, dwarves in the middle and a party in the dining hall. Sounds good to me.
If all else fails, remember one thing:  kittens are delicious, nutritious little goblin-baiters, cavern explorers, and ambush-finders.

Ears? Arms? Entire heads, maybe?
I know that you have to mod out something.

Head works. Awfully permanent though.
