Fixing Forgotten Beasts
« on: May 06, 2010, 08:37:29 pm »

Don't get me wrong, they sounded really cool... until I met my first one.  My squad and war dogs are fighting him as I write this, and have been doing so for about the last 20 minutes.  The beast is made of steam and is apparently incapable of damaging my guys.  Meanwhile, my guys have gone to work on him, torn off all body parts, and put its main body in the red.  All that happened in the first minute or so, and then... nothing.  They continue to score hit after hit after hit, and the beast just won't die.

However, he's in my main work area and has caused nearly all the dwarves to stop working and scurry up the stairs, where they are all currently gathered, apparently watching and possibly singing 99 barrels of ale by now.

So, work has stopped, I can't kill this guy, he can't kill me, and my army is committed to a battle I can't pull them out of so the occasional elk bird can walk by and casually murder some unprotected dwarf.

This looked like it could be fun or FUN, but really, if these guys are going to be arbitrarily invincible and impotent and just shut the place down rather than destroy it, I'd rather they'd been left out.  But they don't seem to be in the raws and I don't see where to limit their number in worldgen.  Any ideas on how to fix them or remove them until they become an improvement to gameplay?

Diso Faintpuzzles was born in 120.  Although accounts vary it is universally agreed that Diso was chosen by fate as the vanguard of destiny.

In the early spring of 143 Diso began wandering the wilds.

In the early spring of 143 Diso starved to death in the Horn of Striking.

I think, don't quote me on this, they're in the save file raws somewhere. If not, modding research is slowly uncovering tags that prevent materials from being used to generate forgotten beasts. For example, HFS-hair has the [DEEP_SPECIAL] tag, which seems to prevent its use. Hard to know for certain, though. Absence of evidence, etc, etc.

They're not in the raws, they're in the string dump:

Dwarven economics are still in the experimental stages. The humans have told them that they need to throw a lot of money around to get things going, but every time the dwarves try all they just end up with a bunch of coins lying all over the place.

Can one use that to modify the beasts?  The wiki doesn't give a clear explanation of what the string dump is or does.  The 40d page seems to indicate that that stuff is hardcoded.  I hope that's not the case.

I know [NATURAL] goes on any non-mythical creatures, it doesn't really mean anything, and ATTACK_TRIGGER:X:X:X] is the same as the similar tag on entites. Does anyone know if putting [DEMON] or something similar on a normal creature could make it show up in *CENSORED*?

Hm.  All of my squad have died of thirst, but the dogs are still working.  One of my craftsmen went fey and actually got back to work.

I thought I would have had a tantrum spiral by now for sure.

Does anyone know if putting [DEMON] or something similar on a normal creature could make it show up in *CENSORED*?
Well, the presence of [UNDERGROUND_DEPTH:5:5] probably means that layer 5 is you-know-where, but what of layer 4?  Could that be the Aes-amgam?

I'm sure it is.  I LOVE the new deeper areas!  Finding "stuff" and "things" is so much more fun now!

Oh boy!  Another beast just showed up.  A venemous Gila monster.  Get 'em, beasts!

I guess the underground levels might go something like this:
1 = soil
2 = stone
3 = Hot Stuff (yeah, I know it isn't really spoilers, but still.)
4 = Partially molten stuff
5 = Incredibly dense stuff

I thought 3 would be the caverns.

I'm fairly certain it's:

1 = First cavern layer
2 = Second cavern layer
3 = third cavern layer
4 = Magma sea
5 = The circus

Please don't call it "the circus," it's so stupid.  Even "Lleh" would be better. :(

Hmmm...  I thought we were talking about preventing unwanted Forgotten Beastlets...  Where do you use the snippers on a six-legged Vomit Carp with poisonous breath?

They're not in the raws, they're in the string dump:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Fixed for you.
Unfortunately, it looks like the creature is unstoppable. I suppose if it were made of a substance that's in the raws, you could cause it to solidify into a dead lump, but steam, vomit and a couple others aren't really possible to manipulate.

EDIT: Why don't you give your dwarves a really low FIXED_TEMP and freeze the beast?
