Is something wrong here?
« on: May 06, 2010, 06:37:39 pm »

I had just survived my first winter, with a solid team of 15 dwarfs, its that time again, time for migrants. The migrants come, and a good 20 pour in, still not a problem, but within 10 minutes i'm lagging. My fortress is only 35 dwarfs, and I'm lagging. WTF?

Specs:
1.8 Quad Core Processor
4 GB of Ram.

you can try:

killing the animal population.
damming waterfalls.
turning off [temperature] and [weather]
DF accelerator.

Eh, its good for multitasking, and TF2 which is processor based and apperntly multithreaded.

Imma check out DF accelerator, thanks :)

Have you tried putting on partial print? In my case, at least, it made the game run close to the FPS cap (the default 100) rather than a middling 30ish fps.

Of course, all the above won't hurt either.

oh I totally forgot that... and don't forget to lower the G_FPS_CAP too, really helps.

Any spam in the log about something being inaccessible?  Broken paths seem to destroy FPS very quickly.

Check fortress value -- if abnormally high it could be a sign of an impending ambush.  I had that happen on my previous fort -- first spring and something like 24 gobbos jumped me.  Didn't have the metal industry going yet, and quickly got destroyed...   >:(

Also if you've breached a cavern, it could be a lot of critters.

How might I do this?

1.8 Quad Core Processor
This is your main problem, in my opinion.
Dwarf Fortress is not multithreaded, thus it only uses one core out of 4.

1.8 just isn't going to cut it once you start heading toward 100 dwarves, in general.  If you have any older computers sitting around you might try dwarf fortress on those.  Some of the older single cores can be pretty fast, especially if you can overclock them without worrying to much about shortening their lifespan or burning them out.

DF Accelerator makes a huge difference, for me at least.  Be sure to avoid water, kill/cage all animals, design your fortress for optimum pathfinding, tinker with high traffic designations over areas dwarfs should be using frequently, atom smash surplus garbage and all those sort of things.  Also, turn of children in the init, they don't do anything but they still use FPS.

Really the best advice might be try and multitask though.  Run DF in a window and take care of other stuff while that one core chugs away.  Or do paperwork, clean house and all that while DF runs.  I sit here and read wikipedia/post/chat on my ancient laptop while my real computer plays DF.
