Defining "Dwarfy"

"dwarfy" as an adjective is used widely on the forums with several conotations. Here are some assorted forum quotes.

I really want that one as a "when". I want "grubs", and "virgin woman" to turn into a dragon. and monkey children to suddenly sprout wings. And I want the Dwarven Mutant Academy to only gain their powers upon reaching puberty. I also have a whole host of odd creatures that only make sense if I divide them into children and adults.

Also, tadpoles.

I'd suggest the following definition for dwarfy:

Requirements:

It must not be the simplest solution to the problem, but it must solve it (note that omnicide is ALWAYS a valid solution).
It must either take a lot of resources (dwarves, time, stone, magma, blood, etc) OR a lot of ingenuity to implement.
It must lie towards the megalomaniacal/evil end of the grandure/ethical spectrum.

Bonus points:

Involvement of magma.
Involvement of stupidly rare/valuable/unethical substances such as slade, adamantine, forgotten beast body parts, blood, mermaid bones, etc.
Killing large numbers of dangerous/cute/good creatures. The more the better.
Needless size - why build a 15 z-level death shaft when you can build a 200 z-level one with magma-falls down the inside?
Needless cruelty, especially to sentients - see mermaid farming.
Ridiculous location - why build that temple to Armok 2 levels underground when you could build it 100 z levels in the sky, or under the magma ocean, or even in hell.
Epic bravery - send a single champion into the pits of hell wielding only a charred elf skull. He'll probably die, but if he survives it will be EPIC!
Needless disregard for nature - sure, the trees look pretty, but they'd look much more DWARVEN under 10 z-levels of magma.

This guy gets it, the problem with the child torture dungeon is that they weren't set on fire first.

Personally I never regarded dwarves as evil. I consider them utterly insane and maniac, but no ethical judgement about them.

I just define Dwarven as capable of doing what needs to be done, but it's also over the top and completely dangerous. Like a hardcore dwarf riding into battle on a cave blob.

anything that involves some or all of the following:

Ridiculous size.
Blatant disregard for the safety of the workforce.
Systematic murder of sentient life.
Heavy abuse of exploits.
Magma
Water (sometimes in conjuction with magma)

Utter disregard for the laws of physics when building a megaproject several z-levels aboveground supported by only a single wall segment made out of whatever was closest.

That's the great thing about this forum. We can derail any discussion into any other topic.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

I would say:

Bigger, MORE POWER-ey, awesomeness, impracticality, magma, alcohol, impulsiveness, insanity, amorality, 0 regard for safety or planning ahead or strategic level thinking.

I don't know...

Some people define it as brutal or murderous. e.g. Killing elven traders as a matter of principle is 'dwarfy'. Drowning/burning/crushing nobles is 'dwarfy'.

Some people define it as over-complicated or more-difficult-than-it-needs-to-be. e.g. Embarking on a terrifying glacier is 'dwarfy'. Building everything out of glass is 'dwarfy'.

Some people define it as awe-inspiring (and often constructed with huge effort). e.g. Having a huge lava moat around your fortress is 'dwarfy'. Building your entire fortress on the sea floor from cast obsidian is 'dwarfy'.

I personally go more for the third definition. I don't see dwarves as being obsessive 'mad scientist' types, or blood-thirsty psychos. They just take great care and pride in their craftsdwarfship.

Nothing is too complicated. The more complicated, the better.

Challenges exist not to be met, but to be destroyed. People have drained the goddamn ocean. Nothing is impossible.

If something isn't working, choose one of the following options:
* Sacrifice goblin prisoners
* Sacrifice a noble
* Drown the elves
* Apply military
* Apply magma
If it's still not working, you're not doing enough of it.

Getting yourself killed due to doing something stupid is dwarfy, but not in the good way.

Defying Kicking physics in the family jewels is incredibly dwarfy (upside-down pyramids, magma forges made of ice, etc.)
