Goats running rampant
« on: May 06, 2010, 03:51:31 pm »

I have about 4 goats that got into my fortress and are running around scaring my dwarves.  I have a squad chasing them but I can't even get close to keeping up and hitting them.  Any ideas?

2 things you could do...

A) goats are skittish. With a bit of micromanagement, you could simply chase them out again. Try positioning military dorfs and herd them towards the exit, and keep some guards (or dogs) at the entry to stop them wandering in again.

B) grab a hunter, arm him up with a crossbow. Hunters are meant to kill wildlife, so these goats could soon just be more food rather than fortress annoyances.

Get another military squad going. Arm them with cutting weapons (swords or axes). Send them out after the goats as well.

I find that one full squad have difficultly with just 1 goat or deer. They definately need a lot of help.

Hunters would be best, but it is more challenging to get hunters to hunt in 31.03.

What is this, a therapy session? We don't need to console someone because they're upset about a fucking video game. Grow a beard, son, and take off those elf ears!

just work with 2 squads if you can, and use 1 squad to push the goats into the other one and basically give them nowhere to run away to. It's considerably harder though on open ground, but it if it inside your fort.....

Also, can be done with 1 squad if you can push them into a dead end

Put cage traps across one of the doorways.  Goats are tamable in 0.31, at the kennel, and you can breed them for meat.

Cage traps are fine, but weapon traps with 10 masterwork steel discs are more fun.   :D

War animals actually work great for this sort of thing. If you have any war bears, now would be a good time to field them.

Yes. Clearly a bug that ought to be fixed in the future, but exploit it in the meantime.

This, it's all a bit benny hill with you're heavily armoured stuntys trying to catch a goat.  Cage traps are the best really, as taming them is handy.

War bears FTW!

I need to start pitting grizzlies and polar bears in the arena, see who's stronger.

I would think Polars would be stronger, being bigger 'n' all. But, I don't know if DF accurately models that.

Grizzly bears are omnivores, eating berries, fish and the occasional stray hiker. Polar bears are carnivores, eating ripping steaming chunks of red flesh from cute seals. Polar > Grizzly.

default stats for teeth make it so war dogs can't kill anything in 2010.

This is false.

They just have to bite a vulnerable area, they can rip out throats and stomachs.  Also If an animal bites and latches on to a (normal sized) enemies head or neck they will shake them around the normal result of that is the head being ripped off in the bear's/dog's mouth.

Why not have black bears, grizzly bears, AND polar bears?

Its not one or the other.

Its not one or the other.

They don't occur in the same biomes.
And black bears can't be tamed.
