IIRC carps were "benign" in 40d :P

Yeah, the problem there was that they were always "cornered" in the river/pool/whatever, which meant that every time a dwarf wandered nearby they started acting like a cornered feral fox.

I embarked in 40d on a "Sinister" Mountain without noticing once.

Let's just say it wasn't. The occasional Dark Gnome was about all I ever saw. Even killing them all off didn't make much difference.

That's because mountain biomes don't have any evil creatures native to them. Unless you get an undead version of evil (in which case you'll be best by waves of zombie mountain goats,) then a sinister mountain is basically a calm mountain with some dark gnomes. Forests and grasslands are where evil gets really FUN.
