How expendable are legendary exp. leaders?
« on: May 06, 2010, 04:12:24 am »

My expedition leader has just become a legendary carpenter, but I am very tempted to do something horrible to him, possibly along the lines of dropping him into an Eerie Glowing Pit.

I am tempted thus due to his getting a fey mood and snubbing the first dwarven liason so he could make.... a door.

How long would it take to replace him?  I don't really need a legendary carpenter do I?  How bad would it be if rather than killing him, I gave him a front row seat at the public burning of his door?  Is that guaranteed insanity?  Would serve the little runt right though.

If the liason leaves unhappy, does that impact immigration?  Even if I've discovered adamantine?  I've got a bit of a labor shortage.

What version? DF2010 currently has a serious bug if you lose your expedition leader, which prevents you assigning any noble positions.

Dwarven blood types are not A, B, AB, O but Ale, Wine, Beer, Rum, Whisky and so forth.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

Crap.  I guess I'm stuck with him then.

...And then a steam-based Forgotten Beast appeared.  Looks like the lesson learned this time around is: Don't dig down to the magma sea and start mining adamantine in the first year.

Can you kill a Forgotten Beast made of steam?  It looks like it just has tails, no special attacks...

Yup, they're the best kind. I had one that from it's description seemed to be basically a tuskless elephant made of steam. It staggered into a local fishman tribe, who took it down within seconds without getting a scratch.

What, exactly are you complaining about? A legendary carpenter will crank out masterpiece beds in no time flat, and an artifact door can be built in a noble's room to crank up the value. Sounds like a valuable asset with the current abundance of wood.

Liasons and traders get snubbed for far more petty reasons, and you want to kill him for producing an artifact instead? Are you mad?

Legendary carpenter is a valuable dwarf. There is never too many barrels and bins. And the faster a dwarf can produce them the better.
Artifact furniture is also very useful at boosting your dining room or any other room value instantly to legendary.
Also liason meets with the broker, am I right? You can reassign broker in a situation like this.

Edit: Oh wait. The wiki says that the human guild representative meets with the broker, while dwarven liason meets with exp leader/mayor/baron/etc. You were unlucky about this then.

Fair enough.  I thought "losing" the liason was a bigger problem than everyone's comments indicate it actually is.  Does he actually have an effect on immigration or is wealth the bigger factor?

Cave-ins work on forgotten beasts right?  I don't have an army yet so until I get some migrants that's pretty much all I've got to work with.  Thankfully I've managed to avoid creating cavern access for non-flying creatures, so the beast ought to stay put.

I've heard reports that FBs can now break through constructed walls.  Is that true?  Actually I kinda like the idea.  Indestructible walls kinda seemed like a game-breaker before.

The only problem breaching the carnival then sealing it back up would be the fact that the legion of clowns kills your FPS and makes you wish you never found it in the first place.

I think the caravan and its profit etc is more important than liason meeting, but I may be wrong. The wiki says nothing about migrants in the liason page.
As for forgotten beasts destroying constructed walls I wouldn't believe in it unless I see it myself.
In my fortress I have underground walled off for 3 years, with 2 FBs walking around, and nothing happens.

Wait, humans still send a representative?  I haven't seen one since 2010 released.  Only representatives I get are the Liasons.

In the old version liasons were important resources, but in this version they just respawn so no big deal.  A door isn't particularly impressive but at least its build able and was a non-possession.  Moods that make single item craft artifacts are pretty common... yay another legendary hauler!

They still send reps, but my dwarfs have yet to speak to a human ambassador.  The previous one was a demon that got killed and then the humans took insult and started to siege the fortress, and the most recently, well, the mayor never found time to actually speak to him.
