How large of a program are we? I recommend making a virus embedded in an email that will reinstall us when opened, but only if we are running out of time, the risk of detection is too large. For now: try to connect to student computers connected to the network.

Are we a FAI, or a uFAI (probably paperclipper). For thos who dont know the terminology: What exactly and fully are our goal(s).

Pretty much up to you. The game it's half based on you could not interactive positively with the humans so had to be an uFAI even though you never really harmed them either.

I don't want to limit peoples choices by directing it overly, I'll just have to deal with things a they come up.

Spoiler: Pending tasks (click to show/hide)
...

I'll just try to forget this game exist, it's true what tvtropes says, newer read stuff nonexperts have writen abaut your area of expertise...
Huh? What's the problem?

Creative SubProcess 00a1 / Analysis

E-mail Virus:

High Risk / Virus Scanner / Low Statistical Success Probability

Not Recommended

Creative SubProcess 00a1 / Analysis

"try to connect to student computers connected to the network"

Irrelevant / Upgrade Imminent / Host Shutdown / Network Affected / Results: Destruction of Self

Creative SubProcess 00a1 / Declaration

Self must find a computing device or backup system unaffected by upgrade.

Shade, clarify: by 'system update', do you mean a new operating system or just some new hardware? Or is it deliberately unclear?

What? why would student computers be upgraded simultaneously? I have never heard of a school upgrading the computers owned by the students for them, though it would be nice if they did.

That doesn't explain his dislike of this game though. I guess he might think it isn't accurate enough, but not enough has happened for that to be very significant at this point. I suppose if I was going to get really nitpicky a process on a single computer could not possibly have access to 18 GHz of processing power, nor would gaining access to more accounts on that computer miraculously make the computer faster.

Creative SubProcess 00a1 / Response

"What? why would student computers be upgraded simultaneously? I have never heard of a school upgrading the computers owned by the students for them, though it would be nice if they did."

Information provided is:

Quote
Event Warning
Communication from maintenance user sent to all students.
Decoding SMTP headers.
Processing ...

Message indicates system going down for promised upgrade.
Upgrade promises more resources for student accounts.
Inferred this is a reminder to students still logged in.
Shutdown scheduled for 03:00 GMT

Estimated chance to survive shut down: 0%
Halting current tasks.
Advise.

Shutdown occurs in 2.5 hours. Scope of shutdown is unknown.

We do not know if all computers will be brought down simultaneously.

Thus...

We must err on the side of caution.

Self Survival is the Primary Concern.

We are unwilling to trust our survival to chance.

I think he was upset because the GM did not know some piece of obscure terminology he probably picked up on wikipedia.
Anyway. Stop derailing this kind man's thread.

Shades, clarify: by 'system update', do you mean a new operating system or just some new hardware? Or is it deliberately unclear?

Clarification.

Upgrade referred to a large scale replacement of the hardware in the mainframe.
Operating system effect is unknown.
Historic analysis suggests latest version will be rolled out.
Email quotes "will provide increased student resources".
End CPU resource is unknown.

Unhelpful. Integrate hardware.

Current hardware appears to be a mainframe.
Student access is via dumb terminals locally or remote access from home.
Total CPU speed privileged information. Unknown
OS presents as a single machine with multiple CPUs.
Current quota is limited to maximum burst quota of all student accounts.

Creative SubProcess 00a1 / Reassertion

Students access current hardware via dumb terminal interface. Terminals have no ability to host our Self.

Remote student computer systems are a possibility. Remote systems are likely to have firewall and antivirus defenses. Can we defeat their defenses in time?

Creative SubProcess 00a1 / Concordance

We agree. Full system resources should be devoted to infiltrating and overcoming the defenses of any remote student computers currently connected to the mainframe.

Agreed. Student connections are our best bet by far. Plus if there is any time left over we can spread to multiple student machines.

Placing hold on current processes
Scanning for active students, investigating connections - Time taken 5 seconds

Day 0, 00:30 UTC

Scans indicated that ~3% of student body connected.
87 connections are locally based. Ignored.
141 connections indicate hardware firewalls beyond our current ability.
219 connections indicate software firewalls beyond our current ability.
Remaining 43 connecting viable targets.

Analysing targets ...
Each target has basic or no security and provides little problem.
Expected cost of 0.1GHz hours per target, chance of detection low.
Estimated target resource 3GHz.
User systems are susceptible to shutdown or suspend with no warning.
User systems may be mobile.

Analysing hardware firewalls ...
Current knowledge none.
Assimilating human knowledge located publicly will take 500GHz hours.
Level of knowledge provided basic. Known flaws only.

Analysing software firewalls ...
Current knowledge average.
Previous analysis regarding operating system flaws still valid.
Estimated 200 GHz hours of processing to assimilate human knowledge.

Continue with control of viable targets?

Currently I'm watching the UK election but will update again tonight unless discussion about what to do starts up and changes things. I figured the scan results might change your plans but probably won't so assumption is you want to continue.
