40d Military/sparring problem
« on: May 05, 2010, 01:53:31 am »

So, I trained up some wrestlers, knowing this would help them avoid damage and not get maimed horribly when training as swordsdwarfs. I set the squad to go equip swords, the now champion wrestlers go and pick up their new mighty iron shortswords, and spar.

And I wait.

And nothing, they don't even get dabbling in sworddwarfsship.

I have seen them spar, I have set them to fight without armour and weapons to get them to drop anything they may have grabbed wrestling, and re-equipped them with swords, chain, and a shield. Nothing. What am I doing wrong?

IIRC, wrestling increases their chance of evading attacks, and you get experience on a hit, so while they don't get hit, they only gain more wrestling expertise because they dodge everything and almost never get xp from sword strikes.

I should still have gotten one hit within 4 spar sessions, no?

Probably but I doubt they will gain a level for one hit.  You don't see a miner gain a level every time he digs out a block.  Then again I don't play 40d so I'm not sure.

Did they actually get the swords?  Or are their hands full of clothes from the wrestling.  If their hands are full do the following:
1) activate the military
2) station them on your clothes/armor stockpile (shorter walks, less hauling)
3) have them use only clothes for armor.
4) once they are done running around, have them use leather, then chain, then plate
5) repeat until they drop that damn sock.

This is a know bug caused by wrestling.  They rips clothes off of an opponent and then don't drop it.

They will always get a level from the first hit; from no-skill to Dabbling.

The only thing they have in their hands other than a sword and shield, are gaunlets, but it's part of their armour, and I assume they're wearing it on their hand

Check for spinal and brain damage?

Have them start with wrestling, shields, and armor. Once they hit legendary wrestling switch them to whatever weapon you prefer they use. At that point it doesn't really matter anymore, because they will destroy anything in 40D.

I'm trying to switch them to swords, but they don't seem to use them
