New To The Fortress - Community Game - Astasarzes
« on: May 04, 2010, 11:31:41 pm »

Just found DF a couple of weeks ago so I figured I'd try a community game just to get the kinks out before I got too ambitious.

Now accepting Dorf applications, that and any bright ideas, or even better dumb ones.

First, I must say, starting a community fortress in order to get used to the game isn't the smartest I've ever heard.
Never mind, I was thinking succession.

I'll be in the starting seven,

Name: Joshua
Skill: Miner

Ideas? How about a Giant.... uhhh... You just started, so...
How about embarking in a tundra mountain... no, bad Idea. hmmm,....

(Easy)
Temprate BrdLf Forest
Temprate
no aquifer
a brook
Wilderness
Thick vegetation
heavily forested

Should be simple enough.

(Medium)
Tundra/Mountain embark
Freezing
Untamed Wilds
no aquifer
low/no trees
low/no vegetation

(Dwarfy)
Sand desert
Hot
No trees
No vegetation
No aquifer
Untamed Wilds

(Living Hell)
Terrifying
Scorching
Rocky Wasteland
No trees
No Vegetation
Aquifer(Optional)

Take your "pick" har har

Name: Spartan

Profession: Woodcutter

Or, if you're going with a treeless area, Mason.

"Urist McDoc", Not Really A Noble has requested to join your group.

Adequate diagnostician, surgeon, bone doctor, wound dresser, suturer. Make him/her the bookkeeper, manager and chief medical dwarf.

Not yet I'm still planning things out. I swear I have more fun designing then actually playing. As an aside is there any way to turn off cats as pets? The reason I'm asking is I'm thinking cat leather armour for all.

Butcher them before they adopt a dwarf.

Butcher them before they adopt a dwarf.
Or build a cage next to a butcher's shop and put all the cats in it, as well as all kittens that are born, and then butcher them at your leisure.

There are two other, more efficient ways of doing it, but both require modding.
The [CAT] raws are located in Dwarf Fortress>Raws>Objects>Creature_Domestic.txt

The least violent way is simple. Remove [COMMON_DOMESTIC] from the Cat entry. Now cats will never be brought with dwarves. You can't even bring them on embark.

The second Way, much more Violent, is Adding [AQUATIC] to the Cat entry. They will air-drown within seconds of arriving. (This allows them to still be butchered, conceivably, you could bring tons of cats with you, let them air drown, butcher them, and get around 7 food from it. [for 12☼ {That's Alt 15, if you wanted to know}] Though this is very inefficient), you'd be better off with removing [COMMON_DOMESTIC]

Hope that helps!

Well, when you get some migrants, name a ranger, stonecrafter or mechanic "Explodian".   :D
Protips:
If you have no other provisions, have booze.  No matter what.
Create small stockpiles for bones and shells, so that when your dwarves lapse into strange moods and require random crafting items, you have some on hand.
Plant a field of Rock Nuts/Quarry Bushes.  They are very useful.

Good luck!  And may the dorfs die relatively painlessly!
