Underground problem
« on: May 04, 2010, 11:17:03 pm »

I just got to play Dwarf Fortress again, and when I try to see the underground it doesn't work. I keep pushing the > and < key but nothing, so I can't get into the underground. What should I do ? :/

Make sure you aren't typing '.' instead of '>'  (remember to hold shift).

If that doesn't work, are you using some kind of mod, some come with non standard key bindings.

Hit esc, go to key bindings, and rebind <> to the correct actions.

Do you mean the caverns and such? You have to actually dig down and find them with your dwarves.

change the keybinding then.

Umm...I'm trying to keybind it again. But I can't find the needed action. Which is it ?

this is probably not it,  but are you pressing shift + <, or shift + >?
Plus as already mentioned you need to have dug down to find them?

So let me get this straight: you cannot change z-level view at all? Or are you changing z-level view but you can't see the underground caverns?

Change view/level down(z)

I didn't dug the underground up or anything, I use shift + > or < to get up and down. But when I first played I could see the underground caves etc, and now I can't. It just remains at the upper level I spawn at.

You can only see stuff you have discovered.  Otherwise it will be black.  Once you break into a cave, it will reveal a large portion of it (the part you can see from where you break in).  Dwarves have great vision underground, but not x-ray vision.

You must have lucked into a site with open caves your first time around.  Not typical.

Hmmm, I understand now, thanks for helping :).

Oh there, one more question, after building stairs down, how to order my dwarf to go down there ?

You have to build stairs up on that level.

Build stairs down into ground.
Go down a level.
Build stairs up into the down stairs.

I warned you about stairs, bro. I told ya dog!
