Catsplosion and solution.
« on: May 04, 2010, 02:05:39 pm »

My FPS are crying over the amount of animals in my fort.
123 dwarves,
66 trained animals
and 265 other animals.

Even though my butchers are working full time and others are caging in the animals, it is not enough. Thus I see myself doing two things.

1. Setting a pit from a very high place.
2. Orchestrating a goblin prison break.

I think number 2 will take care of the large amount of living things, although I think my 66 war grizzly bears will take care of them after a while.

Try this 12 step program...

1) Designate burrow
2) Assign all Dwarves you want to keep to burrow
3) Designate meeting zone outside or somewhere dangerous, with appropriately set lever in burrow if required...
4) Label designated meeting zone as 'Killing Grounds'
5) Cage / Chain all 'wandering' pets you wish to keep.
6) Separate crazy cat people from cats in locked room, hoping cats would instead go to designated meeting zone
7) Turn off all other meeting zones
8) Order Dwarves stay in burrow area
9) Wait for all the pawns to get to the Killing Grounds
10) Pull lever / wait for fun stuff
11) ????
12) Profit

Disclaimer: Crazy cat people may have to be put down if 6 does not work.  Make sure they are idle, or designate burrow for them at the Killing Grounds..

Pet-owners can themselves be used to waste their own pets, who might not make it to the 'killing zone' outlined above. Build a long narrow dead end corridor, place a lever at the far end. Now line the rest of corridor with Retractable Spikes  linked to the lever. Use profiles to make the lever usable only by a dwarf who owns pets, and give order it pulled.
The dwarf will walk into the corridor, his pets will follow. When he pulls the lever, the spikes kill all followers.

Make a soap stockpile, for example in a hospital zone so you can also sort out the retired military dwarves. Wait for cats to try to clean themselves, lock the doors and flood the room with water to drown them. (Make sure you pump the water back out through a grate to reset.)

My FPS is dying around at a speed of 3.
This calls for some drastic solutions.

Does the thermonuclear thing still work in the new version?

I already disliked cats before playing DF, now I hate them. And Scamps is not helping.

think of all the work Toady could have done if he didn't have to play with Scamps. . .

They suffocate because they're out of the water.

Thanks for the tip.
That sounds like a more usefull solution than setting their internal temperature to be the surface of the sun.

If I set cats to be aquatic, does that mean I have catfish?

OKay, the cats don`t seem to die. I put in [AQUATIC][UNDERSWIM][IMMOBILE_LAND] in the raws for cats.
What am I doing wrong?

Change the raws in the savegame, rather than the global ones.

That killed 70 animals.
I gained 1 fps.

Hum, what else can I do to get higher FPs?
