How would you get the cage up to the spike trap? Spike Traps and Cages are both constructions and you can't have 2 constructions on the same spot.

No.  Best way to think of cages are stasis chambers. Once something is in the cage it is removed from our universe for most intents and purposes until you release it.

Well, it would be possible to get a cage in the same square as a spike trap, just not a constructed cage. Just dump the cage from a z-level above. Trap still wouldn't do jack to the critter inna'cage, or the cage itself, but there yeh go.
