Large World Gen
« on: May 03, 2010, 02:10:55 pm »

Is there anyway to get Dwarf Fortress to gen a Large World (2010) without it freezing on me requiring me to "refocus" CPU on it. Every couple of alterations DF freezes and requires me to load something like Firefox, then close FF and refocus on DF.

I really don't see why this CPU is struggling as its a QuadCore 2.8 and genned Large worlds within 10-30seconds on 40d.
is there anything I can change in the Params?

Its not really frozen, just let it go.  Windows may bitch about it not responding, but the game is still working on generating the world, it may just take a while.

Ah ok. Just wondernig cause of the massive time difference.

40d was genning Large in like I said 30seconds approximately. In 2010 its now been half an hour and its only at Year700.

Genning in 2010 is in general slower than in 40d. Especially the history generation, probably due the fact that the generator has much more things to take in account.

You know, they could teach maths like this at school. "There are 105 dwarves in a settlement. A goblin invasion appears and 67 die. Then a migrant wave..."

3 layers of underground caverns chock full of nasties and 20+ different demon breeds to contend with.... Would only make sense that this takes longer to sort out.

oh and BTW, you can stop worldgen at any time after it starts calculating the history (when the year starts ticking up) and play at that date instead of waiting for 1050.

I never had 40d reach year 1050, so that's another factor.

If you decrease the number of civilizations in the world gen parameters, it speeds up the history step enormously. The default is 50; I reduced that to 25 and my Large world was generated three or four times more quickly, and I still have plenty of civs to choose from.

Quad core means nothing because DF can only use one core.  Also, if you have Cull Historical Figures on that might be what its doing when it hangs.  I recommend having it on though because smaller worlds are suspected to lag less.

Well, für me it was maybe 30-60 mins  in 40d,
now it is 4-5hrs

bviously there is a lot more to calculate in DF2010,
maybe because of the massive underground caverns
