I once was on a forum where the people tried to reply and quote so much to the same message, in an effort to crash the system.  Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: in the title, etc.  Kinda funny.  But not at 2400 baud.

technically, you don't actually need an anvil for anything, you could use a flat stone...and anvils are cast, not forged
Magic?!  :o
No, cast as in thrown. The ancient dwarves used anvils as weapons, but knowledge of how they did it has long since passed from our memory.

Ever heard of Cast Iron? Thats what we're talking about as far as anvils being casted.
Yeah I was just joking. Kinda hard on the internets.  :-X

This.  It really saddens me that I am forced to have an anvil in order to make one, when all a dwarf really needs to do is grab an iron bar and use that!  Or even better, why cant the smelter spit out an anvil?  It already has the means to cast bars apparently, why cant it cast an anvil?

This is a change I would quite support, now that we've left the 2d era of "blacksmith arrives in summer with your first anvil".

I beleive the very first anvil was made of wood.

I really want that one as a "when". I want "grubs", and "virgin woman" to turn into a dragon. and monkey children to suddenly sprout wings. And I want the Dwarven Mutant Academy to only gain their powers upon reaching puberty. I also have a whole host of odd creatures that only make sense if I divide them into children and adults.

Also, tadpoles.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

The first anvil was created by the first metalsmith, working the molten metal with his bare hands, as they melted away he used his arms, as they melted away he used his legs.

Eventually the first anvil was created.  Somehow it also menaced with spikes of iron, despite him only using one bar of metal to smelt it.  He also was upgraded from a lowly novice metalsmith migrant to a legendary metalsmith.  Unfortunately he soon after died of dehydration as the doctor was too busy reapplying the same bandages for the tenth time to give him the bucket.  But the loss of a great legendary hero was felt by all.

Until he was put into some random coffin in the communal grave and the first legendary dining room was made of course.

It wasn't until almost 5 years later when the first pick was made.  Greatly reducing the cost of miner dental insurance.

So yes, the anvil came first.  And it was a secretive mood.

On a related note, you could always add a reaction to the smelter that lets you make an anvil without an anvil already built.  Something like this:

Code: [Select]
[REACTION:CAST_IRON_ANVIL]
[NAME:cast an iron anvil]
[BUILDING:SMELTER:NONE]
[REAGENT:A:3:METAL_ORE:IRON]
[PRODUCT:100:1:ANVIL:NO_SUBTYPE:METAL:IRON]
[FUEL]
[SKILL:SMELT]

But, but, I was gonna be the one that mentioned it being made from a mood!  :'(

Wow, just the other day I was wondering how the first anvil was made in dwarf fortress when you need an anvil to make one.

But then I of coursed realized it was a strange mood. :P The first anvil must have been made from a stack of elf bones!

Or blown from glass, or carved from stone.

That's the great thing about this forum. We can derail any discussion into any other topic.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

Making one in the smelter from ore seems a bit too.. easy. I think anvils are way too cheap in the new version. Perhaps making one from 3 metal bars at the smelter should balance it out a bit.

it would be nice if you can make the first one at a mason from igneous stones

...or better yet if you can make the cast at a mason and then use the cast as part of your reaction

you can, i'm making a metalurgy mod where i use casts for virtually anything, and don't need an anvil for anything but iron and steel swords, and then you also need a hammer
