The anvil came first.  It's the only way you could forge a pick.  The more important philosophical discussion is "You need an anvil to forge an anvil.  Where did that first anvil come from?"

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

technically, you don't actually need an anvil for anything, you could use a flat stone...and anvils are cast, not forged

Then I wonder why we make anvils at the forge rather than the smelter.

No, cast as in thrown. The ancient dwarves used anvils as weapons, but knowledge of how they did it has long since passed from our memory.

Ever heard of Cast Iron? Thats what we're talking about as far as anvils being casted.

This.  It really saddens me that I am forced to have an anvil in order to make one, when all a dwarf really needs to do is grab an iron bar and use that!  Or even better, why cant the smelter spit out an anvil?  It already has the means to cast bars apparently, why cant it cast an anvil?
