Can a dwarf set off a trap?

Because im scared one of my dwarves might get impaled.

Only if they are stunned, knocked out, etc. I caught my fortress liaison once that way, and installed him in the office of my broker.

As for spikes, they are lever operated. And yes, activating them with a dwarf on them will result in impalement.

Also what components [is that how you spell it?]do you need to build a spike trap?[edit]And a giant corkscrew trap

Be n the number of tiles  that the spiketrap should encompass
then you need
Menacing spikes = n
Mechanisms = 2n + 1

also how do you command a dwarf to use a lever?And what workshops create the components that make traps work?

Once a lever i built somewhere, you can examine it with 'q' and add tasks. These tasks include linking the lever to bridges, floodgates, spikes, etc. You can also command a dwarf to pull the lever with 'P' (capital P that is).

Carpenters and blacksmiths can make spikes and corkscrews, while you need a mechanics shop and a lot of rock to make mechanisms.

You can also make trap components out of glass.
